lessons more impressive than those of
romance, und it is nioro leurluJ in its
reality than the pictured distresses ol
it whole library of fictions. Cooper, in
. addition to beinir prepossessing in np
pearanee, and without any indication
of the swindler or longer in his miUi-
ner, has, it is said, several qualities of
treat value to an bonest business man.
i Had ho applied hia talents and bis
natural qualities and advantages to
eome honest business with the same
spirit, energy ,tact and zeal with which
ho employed them in tho commission
of crime, he could not have failed to
bo successful, and ultimately to have
become much wealthier than he was
during the few hours when ho was
. possessed of bis ill-gotten fifty thou
sand dollars. JIo chose another coarse,
however and why ? Is not bis crime
and destruction clearly traceable to
the depraved passions so prevalent in
these days for getting rich at a single
Btroko, no matter by what means or
At what cost of present character and
future welfare ? lie was, or had been,
in good employment ; be bad in Wash
ington a freo entrance to what is call
ed "good society ;" be did not lack
means to maintain a respectable posi
tion ; he had won tho love of a good
young girl; and yet he swung loose
from every tio that should have bound
'him to a life of honesty aud honor
und why? Not front necessit-, but
from a morbid desiro to indulgo in
fashionable dissipation, to luxuriate
among tho expensive follies that can
;only bo purchased by money. There
fore he must bo rich, and rich at once,
even by crime ; and, throwing for that
fctake, "ho has lost all character, lib
erty, friends, home everything. A
mountain of gold could not purchase
liack what ho has thrown away. His
poor wife may still cling to him, but
"what words can paint the abyss of
ugony into which lie has plunged that
trusting but now heart-stricken wo
man, or the long years of shame and
anguish that lie before her, to be ended
ouly by the crave! Hers is one of
tho wounds that even time cannot
effectually heal. And this is one of
tho mournful but inevitablo results of
nil such crimes that it is not alone
the convicted and sentenced criminal
who suffers, but tho wives, mothers,
fathers and children of tho culprits
who suffer in mind und soul more
intensely moro than can bo inflicted
by any human punishment.
Tho case is one worthy of special
notice, nnd points a terrific, moral. 'i
loung Conner, a husband ofbutaiow
"hours, and believing himself' rich and
beyond detection, and with all the
bright anticipation of a luxurious bri
dal tour before him, and yet at that
.moment destined to be the occupant
ot a felon's cell before evening, with
the earthly happiness of hi innocent
and trusting young bride in tho mean
time utterly destroyed, certainly pre
sents a lesson from real life far beyond
the powcrof an--romance. Ii ilt. Sun.
A ItEMC. J. T. Hoy (I, Esii., of
Beaver, Pennsylvania, whilo at work
in his garden found a piece of gold
t-oin which weighs within two penny
weights of an ounco and which bears
the date of A. I. b'2'J. This makes
tho coin, incredible as it may seem,
1,337 years old. Tho coin itself is a
Spanish piece, and was found in the
ground on which the old Fort Mcin
tosh stood. It is supiiosed to have
been carried to this place by somo of
the otllccrs at one time quartered in
tho fort. Jlr. 15oyd has refused fifty
dollars for his relic, and prefers to
hold on to it himself. It is certainly
a quaint pieco of money, and has an
ago that reaches a great distance back.
