the dogmas of Stevens &. Co. that
which all our State educational

If tho editor makes up bis journal

we may easily imagine what tho con

about sixty newspapers and periodi
cals received at the reading room, but
one (tho UVM) makes any pretension!
to Democracy ; whilo tho balance are
the New York Tribune, Independent,
Christian Advocate, Harpers' "Weekly,

to devour such stuff has certainly very
little respect for its welfare or love
for bin country. ' AVe suppose it would
bo cc.r.nidcrcd outrageous if tba Fa
culty of tdts inntitution were to an
nounce to the public that tho text
books in this institution were the
writings of A'oltaire, Polingbrokc,
Taine and Hume; yet the mental
food they now furnish their pupils is
a thousand fold worse, because the
literature they consume denies the
first principles of religion love to
God and our fellow man. It is but a
few years ago, (and they will do it
gain, whenever it will serve their
personal interests,) that theso same
publications advocated the slaughter

An Incongruity. A Xational Con
vention of the "Union" party is to
meet in 1 hiladelplna m beplcmber.
None but Southern States are to be
represented, but the delegates will be
Northern men, and all JJisunionists.
Tho platform of principles will be
made by " Unconditional" Union men,
and will 6ct forth the several conditions
upon which they will permit the Union
to exist. The movement is intended
as an offset to the great National
Union Convention of tho 14th of Au
gust, but will have an opposite effect,
as it must convince the peoplo that
the lladicals would broak up tho Un
ion and the Government rather than
their party should be in a minority.
If they publish afaithful record of their
proceedings, wo ask for no better
campaign document to circulate as
proof of their treason, and the good
men of all parties will join with us to
defeat Geary and theKump Congress
men in October. Ihylestown JJem.
