.Tho card of a now law firm ap
pears in oir columns this week. As
the names of tho parlies arc familiar
to our readers, w deem it unnecessa

numerical strength, as customers will
always find some one at the oflico to
lake them in.
Aciests Wanted. We call the at
tention of our readers, to tho adver
tisement of Messrs. Shaw Si Clark, in
another column of this issuo. They
aro tho great, improved, cheap Sew

agents to sell them.
t-Mr. Gaulin has a proclamation
in this issuo of our paper, that is of
vital importance to thoso who aro in
want of tho thing ho desires to dis
pose of, at a slight advance. Read
what ho says, and then call and bcc
him. Hois always ready for a "dicker."
To Contractors. Thoso in want
of a contract, will find it to their in
terest to read tho notice in another
column, given by tho Duilding Com
mittco of the Presbyterian Church,
who it seems are determined to erect
a new Stouo building, on tho ground
where the old antediluvian structure
now stands, on the corner of Second
and Pine street.

The mortality among tho Blacks of
tho South, seemingly in corrobora
tion of tho statemotit of tho fearful
mortaliti' among frcedmcn since eman
cipation which lately was announced
by Judge ciharkey, ot .Mississippi anu
caused a murmur of incredulous sur
prise to run througout the North, we
have tho figures of tho provost mar
shal general of tho armies of tho Uni
ted States to show us how destructive
has been tho war umongst enlisted
blacks. Tho testimony thus borne
shows how vastly disproportionate
havo been the ravages of disease1
among colored troops compared with
ihe white soldiers, though the latter
were in so much greater dfgree sub
ject to the rigors of active campaigning
and marches. J. lie reports tell us that
while 2,097 colored soldiers were kill
ed in battle or died from wounds ro
ceived in action, the enormously large
number of 20,301 were swept nwa' by
disease ; and In his analysis, tho pro
vost marshal general savs. among the
whito troops tho proportion of deaths
in action and from wounds to the
deaths from disease is about one to two; j
among the colored troops as ono to
eight. Abourit one hundred and eigh
ty thousand colored men were enlisted
in tho army during tho war, of whom
accordingly nearly ono out of every
seven died of disease. Tho general
proportion among white troops is one
to fifteen. It may ho assumed thnt
where one colored soldier died of dis
ease, at least fivo others were serious-'
'ly sick, so that a very largo propor
tion ot the colored troops must nave
been constantly upon tho sick list.
