Th.e pctroluin oil business in the west
ern part of the State, is assuming an
v.i;aiil ilegivc of ' activity. East
ern capatalists are investing quite
lar'ly in the lands, and the number of,
wells which will be sunk the comingj
Kcr.son will exceed, it is said, any two
former years. A company from l'hil
ade'illtia have purchased the mineral
lands of Horse ('reck, and intend to
work them immediately. Some part
ir.i are making preparations to bore
:J feet, or three times as deep as
onl'manly. This i.-; l'or the purpose ol'
Ic-Aing whetlier oil oxiv.s below
the third Band rock. The action of
Congress in taxing crude petroleum
is watched with some concern, for it i.
feared that if such a tax is imposed,
it will greatly affect the qur.nity now
exported to Europe. The petroleum
trade lias grown so extensive and pro
fitable, that all the European sources
of .supply are now drawn upon, and by
tho last European advices, 22 tons
of it bad been sent to London from
tho Elac k Sea, and about 6,(Hio bar
rels are contracted fov. This shows
the competition which will soon ari.e,
and how carefully, therefore the mat
ter should be touched by Congress, so
as not to injure a trade of so much importance.
