nounce the direct result of that impru
dent, if not criminal, fanaticism which in
1856 displayed tti sixteen starred banner
through the entire North, and which has
since with steady trend been forcing its
way to tho National Capitol succeeding,
unfortunately, a few years ago, in cainini'
control of the government, which is being I
used to drive out every vehtige of civil and 'pike,
lungiuu uiieriy, nuiuii, utsioie uus lime,
was tho proud toon of every American
citizen. Mr. Speaker, the party who here
opposes these resolutions are the apolo
gist ot those who made this war; and
while they here impiously shriek for more
blood, and stubbornly refuse every effort
to bring about a happier state of things, I
arraign them betoro high Heaven, and the
bar of their country, on the detpoilers of
the one and the enemies of both.
