.iwnke froin their IclhntirVi and are asking
ihempelves "hnw shall wo furnish the
government with the recestary moan of
ubsiatcnio while crushing tho rebellion?"
It appears that there i not ecie n
ough in the country to meet I lie demands,
if Ilia government: and is it possi
ble VhHtwe must g into raurkct and bor
row money ai a ruinous interest? Is tho
governnif lit no much reduced thot hor

ordinary times Kiirroun.UcI ry unprece
lented ciicumfitnnnen. nnd v must lint ho .
surprifed if extraordinary measures should
te adopted lo meet them. When indi
viduals fill into reverses it is customary
for them to give their notes payable on
soma future day. ThiB policy is univer
sally practiced in socity, and why cannot
the govn nment adopt it? Tho Bunking
nystem has driven all tho specie out of
circulation and is now trying to subjugate
tho Kationul treasury to it will. If it!
suoooed we may then expect to see ell'
tho horrid scenes of the feudal system re
enacted in this country. "Patrician" and
1 lebian Utstmctions of society wdl arise I

seen Btanding surrounded by tlie hovel
of the miserable serf. And what is our
roinedy ? I am sure it is not in filching
from the government enormous 00:1 tracts
or demanding of it a ruinous interest
but to stand by her as we would by a
friend furnish her with tho necessary
means of subsistence, uccept her treasury
notes as the best she nan do ipr us at pres
ent, and await a better day to got them re
deemed. It may be said this would bo establish
ing a dangerous precedent but then we
live in dangerous times, and unless some
means of salvation is devised we must i
perish. And it may again be said that
this system would establish and flood our
country tith a depreciated currency
but tlien is notour country already over
run with it, and is it any greater tin for
the government to make paper money
itself, than for it to allow auei authorize
corporations and companies lo do so ?
If the banking pystem had not influtod
our currency we would not bo suffering to
day under the weight of a stuiienduotisly
increasing national debt j for, if hard moi
ncy was the only kind used in tho country
contract! cou Id be made for half tho cost
that thoy are now. But us it is, contracts
are made according to the extravagant
prices established by our inflated or un
sound paper currency, and must bo paid
according to the principles (f a icund
specin currency. Therefore, if we must
go on in this ruinous policy let us go the
'nholo hog or nono,"

Wendell Philips, the Abolitionist. Tho
leaders do not wish for ro-union, lor re
union is synonoinous with the extinction
of the Republican party. Their great ob

political triumph. Re'unite the Union ,
toiday they would be in a minority in
both branches of Congress, and powerless
for mischief in tho Cabinet. All their fan
