mere individual preference. Never, in
ii.. nntuta of this recon. was a
duty performed more cheerfully, or under
uch untoward circumstances. Minropre-
eDtntion.villiflcation and abuse, without
measure, had been heaped upon the party,
and at every turn its members had met
with sneers, taunts and opprobrious epi
thets. The weak may have trembled ;
the timid quailed ; but butt neived them
tor the struggle, and they have core off
with flvlne colors. All honor, wo lepeat,
to the noble-hearted Democracy of Cloar
lield county I
If tho Democratic party had failed in its
devotion to the Union, and its love for
the Constitution-if it had hesiUiled to
follow the flag of the country through
mushine and storm if its members, blin
ded by partisan teal, could not recognize,
in nuccessful opposition candidate, the
constitution! heud of the government,
and through factiousness, bad thrown ob
stacles in tho road of his Administration
in the darkest hour of our country's peril,
ihon that party deserved universal exe
cration, and, like Rob Roy's kindred,
-hould have been dispersed, "homeless
and nameless." But the party, ia the
past, had adof ted Decatur'i sentimcnt
"Our country light or wrong; may she
over be right; tut right or wrong, God
biers her." And sho has remained true
to that sentiment. The glory of our coun
try causes Democratic hearts to pu'.sa'.e
mors freely, and every attempt to detract
from her honor, or to retard her progress,
only nerves and impel them to renewed
exertions.
The triumph of Tuesday was a full,
elear and unequivocal endorsement of
Huch sentiments. The Democracy true to
herself true to tho Union true to the
Constitution was the verdict of the peo
ple. The lame, miserable, uncalled for
attempt of political tricksters to cast a
blur on the party escticheon and to l'nJ
the party with secession, disloyalty and
dishonor has proven an abortion. Tho
patty stands proudly for tho Union one
and inseparable, now and forever.
As Democrats, having in the most un
qualified manner declared our position,
we went into the contest. The sentiments
which have authoritatively been declared
as tho sentiments of the party, are those
which we claim lobe judged by, and which
lhe people of this county, by their ballots,
have commended. We
the creat Democratic pc
duty to the Government. These cannot
conflict, if the party is true to its antece-
dents; but should thoy, then allegiance
to Government should destroy Tarty tie,
Democrats cannot forgot that the claim "nt present, al. hough it is one of the
