STlimiKSOII. THOROUGHLY
AND FBKQUKXTLY. j
A writer of tlio X. K. Farmer gives (
the following substantial reasons for
frequently lioeing and loosening the .
hoii wimo mo crops are growiug, ir
respective of the destructiou of grass
:tnd weeds.
Land that lias been plowed, har
rowed and brought to a pretty smooth
surface, and left in that condition,
soon has a crust formed upon it in
consequence of the evaporation of the.
moister which is contained. This
c rust will varv from a ouarter of an
inch to an inch in thickness, and onj
some soils ueeomes so tenacious mm a
cake of it several inches in diameter
may ho taken up. When land is in
this condition, it is not in a proper
state to receive the fertilizing influ
ences which always surround it, and
of w hich it would avail itself under
more favorable circumstances.
1. If the season is a dry one, and
hhowers arc few and light, the crust
will lead off most of the water into
low places, instead of receiving it
into the soil, as it would if the- surface
were Iij'lit and norus.
2. When in this condition the roots
of the crop are especially deprived of
these tilings, viz. :
The moisture which the rain water
supplies, the ammonia which is car
ried along with it, and the heat w hich
the rain-water contains.
Tho lirst is indispensable to jilants,
the second is a powerful stimulant, as
it renders other matter soluble which
iced tho roots; and the third supplies
the bottom heat lor them, which
keeps tho plants growing when cold
mid chilling winds are passing over
the surface. These several advanta
ge nre in a great measure lost by neg
lecting frequently to stir the soil.
l. Supposo n draught prevails.
Will an unhocd field resist its influen
ces, as long as a field well hoed? Noth
ing like it; because when the rain
t ails, it is mostly led oil' on the impcr-
vous crust, unless it comes in the char
aicter of a storm, and continues
lor many hours. If well hoeil, how
ever, the surface is light, porous, and
in a condition to be influenced by sev
eral causes.
First, by tho air, Tho atmosphere
aiot only hangs over our fields, but
rises upon tho surface with pressure
offiifteen pounds to an inch. This
aiir, or atmosphere, is always filled
with moisture, as may bo demonstra
ted at noon or any hot day by filling
u'pitchcr with cold water. In a few
moments the outside rif tlio pitcher is
covered with beautiful transparent
drops. Where do the' como from T
Why, tho pitcher sweats, exclaim
several about the table If J5ut no water
jmsscs through it, certainly, as mois
turo docs through the nores of the
kin when we sweat. Nor was any
water spilled upon the outside of it,
when it w as filled, although the drops
now trickled down its sides and wet
xv place u foot square in the table
cloth. Wonderful I How came it
there 1 No human eye is keen e
nough to detect the alchemy of the
transmutation ! Tho pitcher being
Silled with cold water, becomes a con
denser, and when the warm air touch
es it, its vapor or moisture, is conden
sed amd formed into drops on the
outside, and this proves that the air
is full of moisture. Now, in a well
cultivated field, this is precisely the
operation of the air upon it during a
drouth. Tho surface of tho soil is
light and porous ; the air containing
moisture, rests upon it, and pusses
through tho loose particles, until it
Sets down where the soil is cooler than
itself, and it is" then condensed, and
tho field isnctualy watered in the wid
41 e of the, hottest day in July! This
operation is continualy going on
through hot, clear days. In the
night, when tho air becomes cooler
than tho ca'th, tho moisture is con
denced on tho leaves of plants, and
blades of grass, and it is called dew.
Somo of this falls to tho ground and
is taking up by the loose soil,
other portions arc absorbed by the
plants, and tho remainder L'oes back
into the air by evaporation, when the
solar rays impart their heat to it.
Thus tho field of the careful farmer,
which is nicely hoed, is daily watered
in tho hottest days by nature's own
processes, whilo that of tho careless
farmer is pinched for the want of
moisture, tho corn leaves curl, turn
yellow, and loso so much vitality
thnt tho crop is ruined.
Who will say, then, that hoeing is
not among tho most important items
of farm work I

ant defines soundness thus : "Wo may
call a horso sound, when ho is
free from hereditary disease, and it is
in the present possession of his consti
tutional health, and has as much bodi
ly perfection as is eosistcnt with his
natural formation." This is not bo
very definite. It is perhaps enough
to say that a sound horso is one vhih
has no marked hereditary disease, and
no present disease or defect, to im-
air his present usefulness for tho
ind of labor ho is intended for.
