1. If tlio Mt-asoii is a dry one, and
)iovera arc few and lihl, tlio crut
will load oil' most of the water into
low jilaces, instead of receiving it
into tlio soil, as it would ifllio surface
wore light and j)Orus.
if. When in this condition the roots
of the crop are especially deprived ti
tlu-su'thiiigt", viz. :
The moisture which the rain water
supplies, the ammonia which is car
ried along with it, and the heat which
the rain-water contains.
The first is indispensable to plants ,
the second is a powerful stimulant, as
it renders other matter soluble which
feed tho roots ; and the third supplies
the bottom heat for them, which
keeps the plants growing when cold
and chilling winds arc passing over
the surface. These several advanta-j
gon are in a great measure lost by nog-1
looting frequently to stir thesoil. I
'. Suppose :i draught prevails.
Will an unhood Held resist its influen
ces, as long as a lield well hoed '! Noth
ing like it; because when the rain
falls, it is mostly led off on the impcr
vous crust, unless it comes in the char
acter of n htorm, and continues
lor many hours. If well hoed, how
ever, the surface is light, porous, and
in a condition to be influenced by sev
eral causes.
First, by tho air, Tim atmosphere
not only hangs over our fields, but
rises upon tho surface with pressure
offiifteen pound to an inch. This
:ur, or atmosphere, is always filled
with moisture, as may bo demonstra
ted at noon or any hot day by filling
a'pitchcr with cold water. Jn a few
moments the outside of the pitcher is
covered with beautiful transparent
lioi. Whore do they coino from J
Why, tho pitcher Hweats, exclaim
hcveral about the table ? J5ut no water
pjisses through it, certainly, as mois
ture docu through the pores of the
hkin when we sweat. 5ior was any
wator spilled upon the outside of it,
when it was filled, although the drops
now trickled down its sides and wet
u place u foot square in the table
cloth. Wonderful ! How came it
there? Xo human eyo is keen c
nough to detect the alchemy of the
transmutation ! Tho pitcher being
tilled with cold water, becomes a con
denser, and when tho warm air touch
es it, ita vapor or moisture, is conden
od and formed into drops on the
outside, and this proves that the air
is lull of moisture. Now, in a well
cultivated field, this is precisely tho
operation of tho air upon it during a
drouth. Tho surface of tho soil is
light and porous ; the air containing
moisture, rests upon it, and passes
through tho loose particles, until it
gctsdown where thesoil is cooler than
itself, and it is then condensed, and
the field isactualy watered in the mid
dle of the hottest day in Jtdy .' This
operation is continual g"i"g on
through hot, clear days. Jn the
night, when tho air becomes cooler
than the ca'th, tho moisture is con
denced on tho leaves of plants, and
blades of grass, and it is called dew.
Some of this falls to the ground and
is taking up by the loose soil,
other portions are absorbed by the
plants, and tho remainder goes back
mto tho air by evaporation, when the
solar rays impart their heat to it.
Thus the field of tho careful farmer,
which is nicely hoed, is daily watered
in the hottest daj-s by nature's own
processes, whtlo that of tho careloss
larmcr is pinched for tho want of
moisture, tho corn loaves curl, turn
yellow, and loso so much vitality
that tho crop is ruined.
Who will say, then, that hoeing is
not among tho most important items
of farm work ?
