ix a very common disease, and if ta
ken in time may bo easily cured in
most cases. It is not unfrequently
('unfounded with inflammation of the
bowels, but is easily distinguished as
follows : Colic has no increase of the
pulse, wihich is not over fifty a minute;
tho uniuiul often rolls; tho disease in
jermits, and there is but little fever.
Which if infliiniationof the bowels there
Is much fever ; tho pulso is sometimes
a hundred a minute, tho attack is grad
ual, and tho disease docs not inter
mit. W hen colic arises from bad food, a
pint or so of a solution of salcratns
will olteu afford entire relief. As it
assumes more of a spasmodic charac
ter, peppermint and ginger may be
added. Wo have used with entire
fcnd immediate suc2css a small spoon
ful of saleratus, tho same quantity ofj
ginger, and a teaspoon In I ot pepper
mint, added to a pint of nearly boil
ing hot water, and given from u junk
bottlo. Powdered charcoal is one ol'
the best and safest medicines for any
disease resulting from derangeinentof
digestion and two cr three ounce or
more mixed with water, may be given
at any time with great advantage.
Inflammation of the bowels is gene
rally increased by irritating medicines.
A drink of slippery elm hourly, and
giving tho horno but little food, and
letting him rest, is safe treatment.
