Urged, so as t interfere with deglutition, r.ad

The primary ijmptom of this frightful discasa,
apparent iu my observation, was pain in the ar.
Tli is v us not only pathognomonic, but prcini
nrn!, and nlinost if not invariably present ; in
every caso that I have teen, and tkoso with whom
I knve conversed, who have recovered, nil re
member this symptom, for a few dnya prior to the
patient's h.nking the least eompla'ut, in any
otkor form whatever, and before tho small
est speck or concretion of lymphatic exudation
could bo discovered on tl o tonsels or cls.-nhere.
To this symptom we must now add fti(Tnes of
the muscles of tho neck, great prostration, ner
vous system greatly depressed, slight chills, the
urtiou of the glands increased, aoro tLru.-.t'
tonguo slightly coated in the centro aud rod
around the outsii.e, orthopnea, occasionally
prematurely slow pulse, but generally accelera
ted and feeble. On examining tbo fauces, tho
toniela wero found to be red, enlarged, and in
flamed, ond soon smnll points of lymphatio exu
dation wero discovered on them which spread
rapidly over the contiguous parts, until it entirely
covered tho amygdala1, uruli, soft palate, and
! the entire anrfucc of the pharnyx with a pseudo-
membrane, which continurd to extend upwarde,
until it closed the nasal f(Unl, nnd downwuids t
as to invade the larnyx, wkora its progress wns
indicated by bourse coughing, aphonia, and or
thopnas, which terminated soon iu secondary
croup.
In most cafes the appetite and digestion were
unimpaired ; and, although I have the report of
a very intelligent physician in JoiTcrson county
of a caso where typhoid fever wns added or en
sued, there was no mental disturbance observa
ble during any stugo of the disense.
In a few cases petechia) wero discovered scat
tered over the body and arms in the advanced
period of tho difciiFO. The symptom was
not frequently met with, nor was it found de
pendent on any peculiar debility or malignancy
of the rase. In ore ease, to wl ith my attention
was called by a friend to observe this eruption, I
could not characterize it as truo petechia, not
withstanding my friend, who is a very intelligent
man and tried physician, so regarded it.
Dysphagia was, of euurse, a common and dis
tressing symptom, inconsequence of theorgsns
of deglutition boing, in very rsvere eases, ex.
tensivcly involved.
In odo case, tho oh tmetion of the tesophngus
was complete, and the patient, (the lait one that
died In the family of Mr. Price.) after surviiing
tho primary sta?e, ond after giving, in all other
re'pects, good hope of recovery, sunk f ir the
