The Difficulty Settled.
The iittention of our Democratic friends
ii respectfully called to tho proceedings
of the Slate E.:eeutivo Committee at thier
meeting at Cresson on Tuesday last. Tho
action of tho Committee was prompt and
l i the point. After mature deliberation
i!ie friends of Douglas and Breckintidge
agreed to suppoit tho present electoral
tick:)!, excepting one of the Stnatiriul
electors, who is to bo omitted, and the
name of Breckinridge or Douglas substi
tuted, ns the voters may prefer, and the
iectoral vote of tho Stato to be c.".st for
the one having tho greatest number. This
will enable tho whole Democratic party ol
Iho Stato to voto as a unit, mn! it is pres
t iely what every ma.i who did not prefer
L.ticohi as his second choico desired.
1 ho result will nlso settle a much desired
point, and that is, whether Douglas or
Breckinridge is strongest in Pennsylva
nia.
This ptoposition was made by the friends
of Douglas, and accepted by tho friends of
Breckinridge, and was supported ami o
poseu by aiiout an equal proportion ol
each, and so fur as we havo seen and
beard, it ha-, not with the unanimous nps
probation of the parly.
And why should it not ? It is perfectly
fair and equitable. Every real Democrat
in the Stato must prefer tho election of
either Brockinridgo or Douglas to Lin
coln. This rirrangenient enables am. situ
to unite and vote for the same electors,
without sacrificing any feeling, prejndice
or party obligation. They may all regret I
the-present unfortunate condition of our
party the failure of the National Con.
vention to mako a nomination that would
havo secured harmonious action, may be,
a9 it no doubt is, regretted by many true
Democrats. But there is no help for thl
now. We must deal with things as they
are not ns they should be, or as wo would
wish them to be. Those who repudiate
his action of the Committee, whether
they aro for Douglas or Breckinridge, aro
iut aiding the Abolition-Republicans in
ho election of Lincoln mid rendering
nim more aid than if they wero to
upport him openly.
