Horticultural Notes for the Month-
This is a good time to bow peas for a lato
crop j out to insure success it win ou ne
cessary that the cround bo in good tilth
deep, rich and moist, to enable them to
stami tiio hot, Ury monin oi August.
Manv uersoiis have a notion that peas
should bo sown on poor ground, becauno
on rich tliey make more leaves and stalks
than rods. I have never found that the
irround could be too rich for peas, provi
ded they have room, and good sticks to
climb upon. If time can bo spared when
tlio peas havo set their first pods, it will
be found verv beneficial to the main crop
to pinch off tho tops of tho stalks a tow
inches.
Sweet or SiuabCorx may still be sown
for a second Crop. Sow in hills three feet
anart. from center to center. If three
seeds crow it will be enouKh. If a shovel
ful of good, rotten manure be put under
each hill before sowing, it will be found
very beneficial.
Lima Beans. A cood way ot growing
Lima beans is to die a trench ono foot
wide and one foot deep; then till in. six I

and decayed leaves ; cover this over with
the surface soil and mix a little, riant
tho beans on tho top, cover ono inch.
When up, thin out to six inches apart.
Now drive stakes six feet apart and live
feet high, and tie or nail a pole on the top
of these stakes, and set thiu brush along
the row, like pea sticks, to enable the
beans to reach tho polo on top of tho
stakes. I think three times rtio auanlity
of beans on tho sumo ground, and at less
expense for poles, can be grown this way
than in tho ordinary way ot hills and
poles.
String Ecass. In some warm, deep,
rich ground, draw hills with the corner of
the hoe two feet apart and two inches
deep. Sow thrly Hx UVefo beans, and
cover over. When up six inches, draw-
earth up to tho stems with tho hoe, and
keep clear of w eeds.
ClCUMUEBS AND MtSK MELONS. IigholeS
two feet square and ono foot deep, and
six feet apart; fill them with equal parts
of turfy sods and rotten manure, or mix
rotten manure with the soil thatenmo out
of the hole, and fill it again. Thi will
raise the hill three or four inches above
the surrounding soil. Sow six or eight
Beeds upon each bill, and pres thoni in
one inch deep. When well established,
thin out to throe plants in a hill. The
Early Christina Musk Melon is tho best
variety, all things considered.
Water Melons managed this way do
reniarkablowell; onlv make tho hills eight;
or ten feet apart, atcli well the luigs,
morning and evening. Catch and kill
everyone. This, and keeping all clear of
weeds, is more readily advised than done.
The easiest way is to walk quickly with a
piece of thin, gauze, and spread it over
the plants before the bugs have timo to
fly away, you may then catch and kill
thera.
Tomatoes are better when trained to
espaliers, or when branches of trees ate
laid beneath thpm to keep them from the
ground1. They are not so liable te rot,
and will remain good later in the season.
Josiaii Salter.

Culture or Indian Corn. Tho grand
points In the culture of corn, are good
ground, deeply and thoroughly plowed
and well prepared, seasonable and careful
planting, early and thorough cultivation
and hoeing, and eradication of w eeds and
grass until the crop is grown.
