Every refleefmj; 111:111 reeofrnies tho na ture, and udinils the value, of aizrieull ure ; vet cvei v such man is nut himself a far- uiei, 1101 uu. .11.- vi.u.ti.i.. .1... - -tlio lots of inanv hein east m other do tmrttnents of labor, l'roliably there are more who would cultivate farms, if they were fortunate enough to nonsess tin in, than thevo are who, ios.ssing them, would forsake them for u voealion less stable. Age, witii its wisdom, likes the fnrm better than youth with its too fre quent vain show and empty aspirations. If it bo true, as Muntesiiuieu obese rve., that "countries are not cultivated in pro portion to tlnir fertility, but to their lib erty," then republican America must soon rank second to no oilier nation in her perfection of terra culture, t ur agricul tural population may not directly lead or control the country, yet they hold the truest btvord in its defence; urd in the heat of any contest, will imbibe now cotir ago from tho recollection of their pleas.mt and enduring lields at homo. I detire to present some thoughts upon this subject, in tho form of distinct pro positions. 1. As tho root and trunk of a tree, are to its iii'iinehe, so is agriculture tosoiicty ; it upholds it, and draws from the earth and dispenses itu nourishment to the dif ferent Liunches of tho social fabric, while ut the Bamo time it derives new vigor from a vital reciprocity. Hence 2. Agriculture is tho foundation of a well-established nation, and the mos.t sta ble element of its wealth, independence, and trreat Hess. Therefore 3. Agriculture i-houlij receive the fos tering ctiro of the fstate, and tlio resneet and encouragement of every patriot. 1. Every farnn r, to protect his business successfully, should feel and cherish tin ambition in it, and a conviction that he ib just the man for it; and, however un lettered he may be, under such inventives he will make great progress, not only i" tho profitable cultivation of his farm, but also in liiental lmtd'ovemrnt. II he has not tho Mitnulus of emulation, he should cho3so a business where ho may be thus prompted, as agrieuliuro can well fpaic tho "slothful in busine.-s." 5. Although farmers as a body may nev er expect to become erudite scholars, each und every owe would bo greatly benefitted by a binall library of standard agricultu ral and miscellaneious books. They are faithful companions t lint always instruct and elevate. 6. If it bo tho "mind thai makes the man," it is not alone in its intellectual phase, but iiho in i s meal. Every far mer who chooses, enn attain to a degree of intellectual culture, and to a moral standard second to none. Ho can and ought to maku himself the ''highest style of man." 7. Although in their well being vo cations aremutually dependent, to ft great er or less degree, tho farmer should never mistrust the valuo of his prolession, hut should defend its digllilv and tvol th by a commensurate independence before li -t mt r men. ia.j.
