this be done, and they will sii'd find in the
hour of trial that they will stand as a par
ty condemned before the tribunal of pub
lic opinion. The thinking, reflecting, and
intelligent portion of the people, will not
nor cannot go with them. Political dem
agogues for a while may hang their hopes
upon such nn organization, but tho far
mer, mechanic, and laboring man, who
have ever found sympathy, encouragement
nnd protection within tho ample folds of
the Democratic party, will not bo led
astray by the empty sound cf a came.
Thty an "American party" indeed, who
would destroy the wisest provisions in her
Constitution! They, who are willing to
coalesce with fnctionists, to sever the
bonds of our glorious union ; they who
ivould striko from oui Constitution the
guarantee of religious liberty ; they who
would placo in its stead a religious test,
organize an inquisition, and compel the
world to pass in review before it, call
themselves an "American party." It is
hut another cunningly devised means ol
deceiving the people, and resorted to alone
for that purpose. They aro bold in say
ing that under their old name they ennnot

a new name, nnd the same old principles,

means they expect to betray the unthink-
ing into their ranks, and use them as step, j
pmg-stones to the seat of power. Against,
such a combination, we have but one ap-
peal to make, and that must bo tu the
common sense of the intelligent part of the
community. Tho ignorant may be de.
coyed into it ; the timid may falter before
it; the dishonest and time-serving politi
cians will rush into its embrace ; but the
honest tho fearless, nnd tho intelligent

disgust. To them will be left the proud
