    Tub Court Costume Again. —Tho
London correspondent of the N. Y. Tri
bune, says the diplomatic clothes question
has again been revived in the British Court:
The livery question is again revived.—
Several members of tho American legotion
were present yesterday, at the drawing
room held by the Queen. In tho belief that
the great American complication was al
ready settled in England* they appeared in
dress, and indeed, looked liko
the only gentleman among unsightly En
glishmen in the awkward court costume.
But suddenly the master of ceremonies ap
proached one of them in great consterna
tion, and remarked that the Queen had al
ready gone ns far ns possible, by not ob
jecting to a plain black attire, but American
republican was presuming rather too fur—
pointing to tho elegant pantaloons of the
gentlemen; black smalt clothes would do;
but pantaloons! It was worse than the an
nexation of Texas. In .fact, he protested
solemnly against this breach of etiquette—
which, it seems, cannot bear pantaloons.
The American gentlemen most gallantly
kept their ground, and did not heed their
protestation.
Stealing Letters from the PO9T
Office. —It is getting to be n rather .com
mon practice, which the postmasters are
endeavoring to guard against, Tor persons
to obtain letters from the post-office, false,
ly representing that they had been sent for
them. A man was arrested-in New York
on Friday for this offence. Ho paid one
visit and had applied the second time, when
the clerk stepped outside and seized him,
just as he was walking off with another
batch of letters. He was taken to the post
master’s room by the special agent, to'
whom he soon made a full confession of
his operations, which it appears, had been
going on for some time, and at onco ex
plained the loss or a large number of miss
ing letters belonging to individuals and
firms.
The Manufacture of WnisKEv. —!
On Tuesday last, a meeting was held in
Cincinnati, of persons engaged in the 1
manufacture of whiskey. Twenty-three I
manufacturers’ establishments were repre- j
sented most of them in Ohio, although a
portion of them are in Kentucky nnd .In
diana. The twenty-three establishments
represented consume 14,058 bushels of
coin and other grains daily, which is raising
four millions a year, nnd manufacture
nbout ten millions of gnllons of whiskey
annually. One establishment alone con
sumes 1,440 bushels of grain daily, and
employs over fifty coopers in making bar
