A New Gold Coin. —Senator Gwion,
of California, has introduced a rather novel
but national idea relative to a larger de
nomination of gold coin. He proposes,
by a bill introduced in the United States
Senate by him, to authorize the coinage of
$lOO, $5O and $25 pieces, the first to bo
called the Union, the second a Half Union
nnd the third a Quarter Union. His ob
jects to furnish acirculating medium which
will supply the wants of the people in Cali-
whore they have no banks for pnper
currency. »
A Great Mine. —The ClifF. mine, on
Lake Superior, is Said to be the richest
copper mine in tho world. No less than
one thousand three hundred and fifty-one
tons of copper were shipped from the mine
last year, and the Lako Superior Journal
states “that the mine has produced, on an
average, one hundred tons per month du
ring tho past year, and it is as rich in mass
copper as at any time heretofore. A hun
dred percent., we presume, will be return-1
ed yearly, as a dividend on the amount of
original investment, for many years to
come.”
