SALE OF THE FUBXiC WORKS. | MARRIED,—On the 7ih of July last,
A.fewdTths UeffiobraUc politicians atii by the Rev.' C. Jefirjes, Mr. Sfitnuef Hen
papers of this State, as well.as nearly all derson, to Miss Sarah Goss, all or Clear
the.! Whiir. presses, i a. saje field county,
of the public yvdrks of Pennsylvania.— "
j|)ia project appears to break- out perodi
,cal)y sections of tjhe Common*
! wealth, but we think, a few plain facts will
Ijshow that the State has .hot managed her
any worse than private cor*.
| pofdliods; add that they have yieldedarev
| enuo that . will/. Compare favorably with
ij thoso ,improvements. It must always be
' .borne irt’mind, flint the State works were
1 the pioneer works of the country, being
i• .constructed at a tjmo when tho buisness
was but little understood, which made
cost more than works subsequently
Yet, notwithstanding this, how
K|does the'Pennsylvania Cnnnlcompare with
'■ ithe Union Canal; tho Schuylkill Naviga
tion Company’s Canal; the Lehigh Navi
gntiom; the Codorus Navigation; tho Bald
Eagle and Spring Creek Navigation ; or
the Tide Water Canal, which is tho outlet
to tide water of oil our canals? Why ov
ary one knows that the Pennsylvania Ca
nal has yielded a revenue to the State,
which increases annually with steady steps
whilst almost all the private Canal Compa
nies in the Stale have become utterly bank
rupt, Unci none of thorn have made any
nhibg like tho money of tho much abused
PCHpsylyanid CatipJ. Even the Erie Ca
nal, that had about four, million of dollars
put into it by the State, scarcely pays on
inrerist on the small amount the company
expended to complete it.
Then again, let. us compare the Colum
bia undPhilidelphia Railroud with tho roads
owned by private companies in Pennsylva*
niaiV- Now docs it compare willp. the Read
ing'Railroad;With the Cumberland Valloy
Railroad; tho Franklin Railroad; tho Wil
liamsport and Elmira Railroad; tho Potts
vilfe and Danville Railroad; the Catawissa
’Railroad; the York and Wrightsville Rail
rqad; thp ijarrisbnrg and Lancoster Rail
road; tho Baltimore and Susquehanna Rail
road; or oven the great Baltimore and Ohio
Ruilrood of Mary land!
Why, so (hr from being in a worse con
dition than any of these roads, tho State]
rqad .qf Pennsylvania has been paying for
several years, an interest of from eight to
twelve per-.cent, op the cqst of its construc
tion, whilst nearly all of the roads referr
ed to have not paid n dollar of dividends
from tho time pf their first opening; some
havo gono into the hands of the‘sheriff or
6equUBt'rators, nhdnpt one of them has paid
: anything like as handsome a revenue as
itbp old Pennsylvania road.
< • When this is known to be the case, wo
i would advise;, the politicians and people of
j Pennsylvania to/exorcise a little caution on
I thisquestion, as thero may be more behind
it than eye. Some ten years ago
when ilid State was in embarrssed circnm
ptnncea, our legislators and politicians took i
a panic,. and sold out millions of dollars
•worth of the public stocks of tho, State for
a few hundred thousand dollars; and by
Ihis sale many of our shrewd monied men
ttiMo immenso fortunes. Soma of these
Btbeks for a dollar a share, that paid
an interest of fifty dollars in jx fow years.
Uet the {people, there,fqrej .bpwaro that a
similar speculation is nbt behind "thts pro
•jeci of a sold of the public works. If such
lintrierise works were put into the market,
of course they -would bo sacrificed.
“ AH ouf improvements in Pennsylvania!
fes well as those of the-State'as of private
corporations; are rapidly increasing their
i [ Seventies, but nojiG liioro so than ihosp of
■ the commonwealth. The season of depres
sion of all 1 these, wo has‘passed, on cl
wihey are all loojkiognp, , Tho State works
fare in a better condition than at any for
i juer. period. A new line of over ono hun
dred miles will:bp opened next spring,
without materially increasing the Stnto
debt.-~fhe works aro more valuable to
tho comriiiinitv than they have ever been,
tend dt would' be, t he. height of 1 mad ness to
''dispose of llie'm at a sacnifice at this time.
