    TfIBJSE DAIS HATER FROM EUROPE.
ARRIVAL OP THE ASIA.
Tfce. steamship Asia, from Liverpool,
arrived at New York at 11 o’clock on
Thuraday night, bringing dates to the af
ternoon of the 16th inst.,
The Asia brings 03 passengers, among
whom are Earl Mountcashel, M. P.. R.
Stephenson, M. P.; Wm. Jackscin, M. P.
Thenews is three days later, and uniin
portant. —-The Eastern question was in
i statu quo.
i The firmness of Com. Stringham _and
j Mr- Brown, our charge pro tem at Con
stantinople, had prevented the carrying onj
| of Costa, the Hungarian seized at Smyrna. |
| In the British House of Commons, on
Thursday evening, July 14. Disraeli ad
verted to hiß previous remarks on the sub
iject of the Eastern troubles, ahd said that,
as things had now come to whatjis called
a “dead lock,” lie thought it advisable
that Government should fix n'day for Mr.
5 Layard’s motion on the matter, in order
!" to have it fully discussed. .
I Lord John Russell, in roply, stated that i
he (Russell) had, in error, made a mis-1
statement respecting the meaning of Count
Nesselrode’scircular, re-perusing that doc
ument ho admitted that Russia intended
; to make the withdraw of tho allied fleets
from Turkish waters the condition of tho
evacuation of the Pj incipalities. With re
spect to the honorable members’s (Mr. Dis
raoli’s) supposition that negotiations on
tho subject had come to a “dead lock the
contrary was tho case. Both the French
nnd English governments had considered
that there are propositions which might
be acceded to both by Russia and Turkey,
which would be tho means of obtaining a
pacific solution of these unfortunate dif
ferences.
- v Fbance.—The following noticeable
| paragraph appeared in the Eestnfctte. —
4 We blame the government for not having
f| made public what we are assured Wes’ de
r| cided on in the Council of Ministers, name
§ ly, that if in tho event of any misfortune
§ happening to the Emperor, the pragnanev
| of tho Empress shall be immediately de
§ dared, and Prince Jerome regent.”
I The Eastern question keeps the people
I in nnxioty. The Constitutionncl confirms
1 statement already made, that a joint noto
j I by France and England is on the way to
I St. Petersburg, and adds that the noto has
I likewise been approved by Prussia, and
I (this is questionable,) by Austria.
I TunKET.-r-The position of Turkish af
: 4 S fairs is, in reality, unchanged.
A dispatch from Constantinople, June
i l aO. mcntions that tho Porto had effected a
• j loan of 45,000,000 piastres, (about two
' millions of dollars,) ,from the Oriental
1 I Bank, nnd that another of 50,000,000 is
in progress of negotiation with foreign cap
italists. The Sultan has sent to the mint
|?k all the plale he inherited from his mother,!
■ - and valued at 40,000,000 piasters. The
r jaaval and military commanders continue
i’, to take afl precautionary measures. To
f 1 guard against a night surprise, merchant
’ ships comijig from the Black Sea are for
bidden to take the entry to the Bosphorus
after sundown. Riots, which were attri
buted to the intrigues of Russian emis
saries, Imd taken place against the Christ
i ons of Adrianople and elsewhere, and Tur
kisli authorites had lakenenergetic steps
for protection of life and property.
Russia. —Two characteristic incidents
. are noticed. The Russians have assum
; ed direction of the Holdaviun and Walla
, chian post-office ; and have ordered a sol
■f emn religious service to be celebrated in
camp nt .Warsaw, to induce God to
the array of tho “Orthodox Faith.”
the .infidel. The merchants of
Odessa have, been warned not to send ac
counts of anything that to for
ri “ eign correspondents.
Austbia. —The position that Austria
t ; -will occupy in any recourse to hostilities
jla watched with "anxious eyes. It was
never imagined she would prove a very
impartial mediator, and the additional
complication that M. de Bruck has caused
1 the Turkish difficulty, by reviving his de
mands for the cession to Austria of the
ports of Kleck nnd Sutorina, nnd for the
, u . expulsion of all Austrian refugees from
i: ; ' '.Turkev, is no more than shrewd politicans
• p • looked" for. It, however omens ill for the
r iprospect of a speedy settlement. From
E ’Vienna we have nothing directly bearing
j ’on the question. Letters received from
f. various parts.of the Empire indicate that
, { ilroops are concentrating alongthe Adriatic.

DIED. —In Brady township, on the 23d
instant!, Mr. David Dunlap, aged about 76
years.
On the 27th ult., Thos. Fenton, aged
54 years, 11 months, and 25 days.
The dec’d leaves a widow and numer
ous friends to mourn his departure. But
they mourn not as those who have no hope,
for they expect to meet him in the king
dom of immortal glory, where friends will
never part. As a moralist, I never heard
anything bad to the charge of Thos. Fen
ton. And ns a philanthropist ho had few
rivals. It appeared to bo his paramount
desire, to do to others os ho desired them
to do to. him. As a Christian we believe he
was sincere, although ho made no loud
Erofession —yet his conduct showed that ho
ad the love of God dwelling in his heart,
and that all his benevolent actions,, were
but tho overflowing of this love, manifest ]
to his fellow creatures. He met death as 1
a Christian, without fear. Death to him
was but the dawning of an immortal day,
and thecomffiShcement of an eternity, of
never failing bliss at God’s right hand in
glory. He had that religion which ena
bled him, to triumph in the view of tho
stern monster death; and shout glory to
l God and the Lamb. Hallalujah, praise
the Lord for tho Christian's hopo.
