A Tire broke out tha evening of the 12th
insl. in Newark, N- J-» whereby a very
Jorge amount of,valuable property was de
stroyed.
Tho fire broko ,out in tho extensive
steam sawing and planing thills of D. Rip
ley, the largest establishment of the kind
in the State. It,was caused by what is
technically called “the back draft,’ or
tho intrusion., of a current of air down the
chimney, thereby driving the flames into
the furnace-room, setting fire to the fuel
upd the wood-work. The combustible
nature of the ipaterials rendered all efforts
: to extinguish the fife ineffectual, ana in
an incredible short spnco of time the largo
• establishment was but a heap of burning
jcoals. Mr. Ripleyts loss is said to be from
,1880,000 to 8100,000. We could (earn
concerniug his insurance.
'! From the mills the fire spread to the
tgreat lumber yard of Horace J. Poineer,
Inhere a stock of first class lumber, valued
nt over 830,000, was quickly destroyed,
scarcely any portion of it being saved
I'ro/n the devouring element.
Next came an exiensive box and trunk
manufactory., owned by- ,which was
nearly destroyed when the reporter left.—
The loss on this establishment is estimat
ed at 815,000.
This U the most extensive fire that has
occurred at Ncwnrk for a long time. The
smoke was distinctly seen in Now lork
city.— Dem. Union.

Quarter Sessions:
Commonwealth vs. Dr. Waggoner. —
This was a very amusing case, the Doctor
being indicted for obtaining money under
false pretences, by the following “cute”
stratagem in the healing art, played off up.
on his patient. Ho told his patient, who
was u consumptive, evidently pretty lar
gone, that ho could, by invoking the assist
ance or the Holy Spirit at three private
interviews, euro him, or he (the doctor)
would have no share with God, which the
patient was credulous enough to believe,
and granted.the doctor the first interview,
whereupon the doctor asked for a black
thread, measured the sick man’s arm and
»ide, then requested some salt and bread,
and a small piece of the old gentle
man’s shirt ; which were all produced,when
the doctor, in a manner very sanctimoni
ous, or to use tho expression of the old
Dutch witness, in a way which “St. Baul
us” would have done had he been on
earth, stitched’ the panacea in the waist
band of the npan’s breeches, and told him
now to produce every cent of money he
had in the world, which modest request
was also complied wjtb, the doctor delib
erately selecting n two dollar note, then a
five, telling his patient that a five dollar,
note was better'than a two, and then se-j
lucted two gold Rollers and some silver,!
amounting in nty to tw.elvo .dollars and
twenty five cents, asking his yery doubt
ful patient to make a choice between these
twd propositions : “to continuo in bad
health, or wish tho selected monev to pass
out of his sight.”' Health was, of course,
wished for, and tho doctor pocketed tho
\ dust to get it out of hta sight; and to do;
} this more effectually, he thought it advisa- j
t bio to leave for parts unknown. This ar
rant old villain escaped on legal grounds.
The Court telling Vie jury in their charge

i Table Movements. —This subject has

clockmaher, which are printed in the Phil-

the wood composing the table, eventualy

of two English feet from each other. The
