toe may party.
Softly breaks the May-day morn,
Perfumes on the air are borne,
< Flowrets deck the wood-land sod,
j Now by fairy footsteps trod ;
: Happy laughter charms the ear,
• Happy faces, too, are here, —
■ As the clouds, fleet cares away,
1 Fading from the smile of May.
Children throng the silvan scene,
Jin the paths rich garlands glean,**
-Or, exultnnt, from the swing,
iMako the woods with echoes ring—
iMoro sedately, maidens walk—
Swains, in low-voiced murmurs, talk,
: Parents’ smiles once more are gay,
As they watch the sports of May.
Lo 1 upon yon green-girt throne,
Sitteth in her state alone,
One young creature, fnir to sec—
“ Beautiful exceedingly-—”
Flowers are in her shining hair,
Meet for one so pure to wear;
Clad in simple white array—
Sure, it is the Queen of May.
Round about her, handmaids stand, i
< Joyous, blushing, smiling band—
J Now in deep obeisunce bending,
1 Now on queenly heals attending,
1 While the choral song is sounding—
| While bright thoughts uro mutely bounding;
I Till dispersed once more to play,
, Trip it off these elves of May.
So when evening’s dews are falling,
And tho whip-poor-will is calling,
And the shadows of tho mountain,
Tremble o’er the crystal fountain—
• Then—the homeward paths descending,
See tho inirthsome .troop is wending,
For so soon hath passed away,
Day ns bright ns this of May.
