Was a pother among tho legislative ladies,
somewhat, as it seems to us, in impeach,
ment of their temperance, (vhich—pardon
Ui for saying—suggested anything but a
•‘foregone conclusion” of gin and water.
Outspoken and logical, the ladies were, be
yond all cavil: they really told the world
a bit of tbe/r mind ; and they adopted
certain resolutions which evince, in a not
able way, how far woman’s wrongs may
be carried in vindication of woman’s rights.
It was unanimously resolved by these fair
dames, that drunkenness is a capital crime,
like a murder or high treason ; that mod
eratioif is equal in offence to drunkenness ;
that accomplices are equally guilty with
the criminal; that there is no hope for tho
American union except in the general
adoption of the Maine law: from all which
jl logically and legally follows that the man
tvho gives his friend n gloss of wine—the
publicnn who sells a potof beer—deserves
to be hunted down by oil men, or, rather,!
pyall women, and put out of the world J
ps a measure of domestic safety. After!
this exhibition of lemale “temperance,”
we are not much surprised to read in
American papers that the strong-minded
pnd sinewy.limbed apostles of tho cold
watersystem havealtacked tho stores,chop
ped up bagatelle-boards, smached glasses
and goblets, and poured the strong liquors
into the common sewers. These apostles

Envy.—-Of all the spies, human or ani
paaf, envy is the most persevering, prying,
observant, nnd indefatigable in its sorpent
pke attributes.
When the Great Frederic of Prussia
put the question severally to each of his
courtiers, requesting their opinion os to the
pest remedy to sharpen the eye-sight,
some recommended fennel, some glasses,
some one thing and some another, till it
came to Actias, jyho very gravely advised
pis sovereign to try envy.
Whatever we do or say is straightway
snapped up by thislurkingsinister meddlor,
distorted and disarranged by this eldest
porn of malice, and then gave to the crew
pfsemi-demons, ever lurking along the
hedge-row of vice, us a by-word and mai
ler of ridicule.
Whatever we do ill is magnified dy this
|mp of hate to absolute wickedness, and
ven ® ur actions and motives are dis
torted to the very hideousness of aspect.
All our failings are watched and blazoned
forth to the gaping crowd, ever ready to
grasp at a fault in a fellow being, and for
fhot fault crucify him without mercy.
Envy is the lowest, vilest, meanest of all
toe passions that ever swayed the human
peart j and while faith, love, hope, justice,
pnd all their sister virtues, combine to en
noble and elevate humanity, and while
pate, revenge and blear-eyed malice are
put semi-activo qualities—dependent upon
pthers circumstances, foreign to their in
puenco, for their action, for their very ex
istepce—envy is over on the alert, ever
»n action, playing the insidious spy.
Dependent upon no circumstances, in
digenous to no clime or country it leaps
jnto instant being full-fledged, like Minerva
from tqe brain of Oylmpus’ Thunderer,
and the first act of the young fiend is mis '
Chief.
Envy is bo cowardly and contemptible
an attribute that it exults in wretchedness,
and * a “BhB and makes it more wretched
ahll. Jl he envious man is more miserable
P»n the serpent could bo, endowed with
Wisdom and sensible or the Almighty’s
*"“!P"8 curse 1 for though he has poison
withm him, and can cast it upon others,
yet the plague spot is more fatal to the
mental of envy than to any upon whom
Mie foul venom is vented, ns it almost al
ways rankles deeper and deeper in his
peart, till like the maddened scorpion it
■lings itself to death.
Envy sold the youthful Joseph into
Egyptian bopdage; made Saul a rebel
, Pgaipst God and justice, and Dnvjd a
‘ mirderer. Envy gave the son of God
pimself to an ignominious death of more
|ha« mortal agony, and, in short, the de
pnon envy has caused more civil and un
cjvil dissensions, wars, bloodshed, mur-
of everything that is the op.
postte of harmony, than all other causes
combined.
He that would avoid envy in himself
must possess honesty and independence
plough to despise it in others. But ho
that would avoid the danger, of it in others
■pust keep we)j clear of their company.

“1 LESSON IN ITSELF SUBLINE.” •
A lesson in itself sublime.
A lesson worth enshrining,
ft this—“f take no heed of lime.
Save when the sun is shining."
These motto word# a dial boro,
And wisdom never teaches
To human heart a belter lore
Thao (hie short eenten co teaches.
As l»fo is sometimes bright anil fair,
And sometimes dark and ninety,
Let us forget ail pain and care,
And nolo its bright hours only.
There is no grove on earth's broad chart,
But has some bird to cheer it ,*
So hr pe g4on in every heart,
Although we may nm hoar it;
And ifio>doy the heavy wing
Of sorrow is oppressing,
Perchance tosraorrnw’s eun will bring
Tho weary heart a blessing.
For Jife is sometimes bright and /air,
And coinr-times durk and lonely,
Then let*6 forget its toil and care.
And note its bright hours only.
We bid the joyous momenta host**.
And then lorget their hitler—
We take the cup of life, m.d tasto
No portion hut the hit tor ;
But wo would loach our honrts to deem

And plea*nni hours should over aeem
To linger round us longest.
As life is sometimes hnght end /uir,
And sometimes dork urid lonely
Let us Jorgci its toil and cure,
