Tho Legislature has also resolved to ap point a board of railway commissioners, with extensive powers. A bill was also introduced making it a fine of SlO.OOO for every person killed jupon a rnilroad, and imposing heavy pen laities for injuries on account of accidents, by carelessness. The committeo appointed, are instruct ed to repair at once to tho scene of disas ter, and collect facts and report officially. A thorough investigation of this affair is to be made. Burning of the Steamer Ocean Waves, Twenty-eight Lives Lost. | Ogdensbobg, New York, May 1. The. steamboat Ocean Wavo, was destroyed by ; fire on Lake Ontario, at 2 o’clock on Saturday morning, when 50 miles above- Kingston, on her passage to this place. Out of the passengers and crew, number-. ing fifty in all, only twenty-two were sav- j ed,so tbnt twenty-eight were either drown-: ed or perished in the flames. ' Among the saved were Captain Wright: and the Mate and Purser. When the firo 1 was discovered the boat was a mile and a, , half from the shore, and so rapid was the I ’progress of the fire that the upper deck was consumed in fifteen minutes. Thehull drift ed qffshore and continued burning for about two hours when it went down. The persons saved were picked up by passing vessels, attracted to the sceno by the glare of the flames. The Ocean Wave was owned by the Northern Railroad Company of Ogdens burjV, and was fully insured, Vebdict in the Murder Case in j Pittsburgh. —'■Eight and a Half Days | in the Jury Room.—On Saturday morn ing, nt half past 11 o’clock, the jury in the case of the commonwealth vs. Mary Dela- j ney, alias Jones, came into court, having agreed upon a verdict. They found the defendant, Mary Delaney, guilty of man slaughter, but recommended her to the mercy of the court. The counsel for the defence, after the verdict had been record ed on the docket, look exception to it, on the ground that it was delivered to the court in writipg, the finding of the jury not being pronounced by the jurors in open court. The exception was entered. The jury in the case retired on Thursdny evening, the 21st of April ; consequently they wore confined to the jury room for eight daysand a half.— Pitts. Post, May 2. Hobbible Calamity.—An occurrence has just taken place in Puris, and it may be well to make it known, ns such acci dents ought to servo ns examples. A gen tleman, feeling o slight itching in his ear, took up n friction match in order to dispel it. In the ardor of n conversation he Was sustaining, he introduced the sulphurous end ; the contact soon produced ignation, and the downy lining of the ear caught firq; a.portion of the sulphur ndherco to the flesh, and burnt there persistently. The unfortunate man never spoke again. His sufferings were soagonizing that histongue ‘Keciine powetlessr and,.after two dava torment and unavailing efforts of thd surg eons, he died. Another Railroad Accident. Boston, Mav 7.—Thisaftornoon, at half past four o’clock, as the New Bedford and Taunton train was near Taunton, Mass., the axletree of the tender broke, and,, with the baggage and passenger car, containing twenty-five passengers, was precipi'ated down an embankment thirty feet. An eye witness says it was a miracle that all with in were not killed. But two persons were ! seriously though not fatally injured, win e fifieen received slight bruises.
