CORRESPONDENCE OF TflE REPUBLICAN! idia. J Sketehes bf tbe Mississippi Valley.—No. 1. Washington, Ind., March 19, ’53. Messrs. Editors:—h. few months ago, | you published in your valuable paper, sev- ] erayietters Avritten over the signature of j “Inca, ‘’'giving a glowing and thrilling de-! scription of the Amazon River and Valley j of South America. Those letters, though I written with great talent and force, and j with an appearance of truth, can, by | close scrutiny be seen, that their ultimate j object was to feed and gorge the insatiate j appetite that now pervades our country for more foreign dominion! To counteract, in some measure, the pernicious influen ces which those letters have already nc-! quired in our country, I propose to give to your readers, a plain nnd truthful descrip. I tion of the Ohio und Mississippi Vallies ; i or what should be called the geeat valley of the, world, and endeavor to show to them ns far as my poorabilities will permit, that our own country hu9 natural and artificial advantages far superior to any other coun try in the known world, if properly devel oped.' That these advantages are neglect ed, no one can deny ; and the cause that our internal resources are not more devel oped, can bo traced to the u'ily designs of. political demagogues who are thirsting of- j terpower, and who it laid in their means, sacrifice the best interests of their country, and their fellow man for their own self-aggrandisement. These dema gogues are always pointing out to the peo pie some fancied Eldorado in a foreign clime, as an inducement to get citizens from our country to become settlers on an other nations property, and then for somo imaginary insult, or some other frivolous pretext, they immediately ,demand “y«s lice" from our government, which gener ally ends in war, bloodshed, and a large expenditure of the peoples money, nnd a small quantity ofterritory for indemnifica , tion for “their trouble.” This territory the government then.Vsub-divides” for the ; purpose of creating high saluried offices for those whose ambition led them to cre ate the disturbance. Believing such to be the case, I urn led to believe that “ Inca's ” letters were propagated by these dema gogues, for the express purpose of feeding . and exciting this insatiable thirst after more territory, which*is now raging wild and rampant throughout the length and breadth of our country —nnd I am sorry that some abler pen than mine, has not had the courage to take up this subject and lav it before the people with the clear ness and plainness which it requires. Taking the Ohio and Mississippi rivers with their tributaries, we huvein the great valley of the world, an unobstructed navi gation of sixteen thousand six hundred and ninety-six miles, and over thirteen thous and miles of unobstructed steamboat navi gation—and taking the valley lengthways I we find it threo thousand two hundred nnd sixty-seven miles long, and the average i width is two thousand miles, making in all over six millionsof square miles which cm- ] braces the most prolific soil in the known ‘ world. A space of country whose climate cuables the producer to cultivate all ttie various productions of a tropical or any other clime—in whose bosom lies ex haustless quantitiesof all kinds of minerals; some in a pure stute, from “stone coal” to the purest of gold. Can any foreign coun try boast of such a valley and of such re sources for wealth as this ? Is not this enough to gratify the very desires of av erice itself. Add to this our broad Lakes, Vallies nnd navigable rivers of the north ern and middle' States. Contemplate tho ■ majestic cities nnd growing villages that j r aro scattered through our vast interior, ' pouring their commerce upon every shore, i and supplying by their handicraft every ’ article of utility and elegance which our ( i increased population can require. Go from tho Atlantic to the Pacific—from the Rio Grande to the Canadas—survey the spa : cious regions which stretch between these | limits ; observe the indications of wealth and plenty which every where meet the v eye. Fields covered with exhuberaut j harvests; hills on which graze unnum ' bered herds; large districts blooming with V cultivation, smiling with comfort and pro j ducing in abundance whatever can con j tribute to the convenience and luxuries of | man. What more can we desire? Do i we want lands for the culture of grain ? | Tho vallies, hills and plains of tho north ■{ afford every facility for these productions. : j Do' wo want timber for ships 7 Tho oaks i; of Florida and the pines of Oregon would ii for the three next centuries build navies J for the whole world. Are we eager for i? the precious metals ? The varied regions ;V. of our country contain these in sufficient I quantities to satisfy the cravings of all the ) avarice in the world. And shall wo yet I crave more? Are wo never to be satisfi | ed while there are other lands to covet, I and other treasures to allure us? Shall we neglect the riches which nature has poured in exhaustless, profusion over our broad domain, nnd seek with the insanity rj of the Alchymist for the fancied Eldorado *" of a foreign realm! Forbid it my country ! meh ! Forbid itGod!! Forbid it Heaven!!! I have somewhat wandered from my subject, in these introductory remarks, which I beg your readers to bear with, ana' in my next I wi|l try ‘tostick tp the point.’ I Remain yours truly, . On the wbolo» including salary and business, ; afiiuld think this gentleman might manage id wake both ends meet.— iv: Y. Mirror. or & Mexico.— HerDestint.— Thepolitical and financial condition of Mexico at the present time is attracting the attention of political ecbnoniists, who see, therein vast results unfolding themselves. She hos a foreign debt pending of about 853,000,000, and u domestic debt , of $70,179,406, making a round aggregate of some 130,- 000,000, to struggle against without the ability of paying. That her sources for liquidating aro diminishing is a fact, shown by the decrease of her revenue, from 820,. 000,000,before her independence to 810,- 000,000, under General Arista ! How can this immense debt bo met, each year ad ding to its magnitude? Certainly not from revenue, as shown; certainly not from I taxation, for the people are poor, and have certain insurrectionary feelings that I will not bear tampering with. To add to jtho weight of Mexican tribulation, Santa Anna has returned, with all his hostile feeling toward the United States, and every disposition to annoy us. His policy is not vet reveiled, but, to judge from his past 1 conduct, we have but little hope from it. — He certainly will not bo able to free Mexi co from the burden that oppresses her.— Nothing but trouble can result from his return. Mexican writers arc seeking for an answer to the problem of what they are to do, and ire looking, some of them hope fully, towards annexation with this country as the solution ; others, with dismal, looks, openly admit the chances oif such a re sult, one writer saying, that if the remedy |is not found in a spirit of unity—which Ihe admits does not exist—“the United I States will obtain the object of their intri- I gues, and Mexico will at length be blotted lout from the catalouge of nations.” What that obliteration means wo leave foi others to infer. —Boston Post.
