LuntEßsFuito, Dec. 9,1852 Messrs. Editbrs: In your poperof the' 3d of Decernber I observe a • communication signed "Law rence," in which the writer says, "the brother of the candidate for Sheriff," which can mean nene.other than myself, "was a delegate in theconvention of 1851, and opposed to John McPherson' for Trea surer.' ' The writer of that article is eith er greatly mistaken, or has published a wilful falsehood, and my mind strongly "inclines tolhe latter, as I believe the nu thor to be the same , gentleman' who was an unsuccessful candidate before thaecon vention, and who was .welt aware before the convention met that the delegates from Brady township were instructed for John McPherson. I was the delegate in that convention that nomintated Mr. McPher ion for Treasurer, and voted for him on the first, second and third ballots, and would have continued to vote for him had I seen any hope of eirecting his nomina tion'. In a word, I was the friend of Mc- Pherson when I went into convention; and I left it his friend; and if that is disputed let them give us another chance to vote for him, and perhaps we will show them that we will not as tamely us- before sub mit to his being chisseled out of a nomina tion fairly given him by the people.— 'Lawrence' also charges the recent candi date for Sheriff with keeping an open Bar for Buffington, when he ran for Congress., This is equally untrue I I was the one who kept the Bur, and know all about it. Some time previous to the olection, a friend of Buffington paid me 'five dollars, which was to be taken out in liquor on the day of the election., and on that day a gentle man from Curwcnsville wason tho ground early, to use the liquor, and see that val ue was had for the V—and that same gen- Itleman, if, asked, can testify that I gave an equal quantity, at my own, expense, for Dr. Lorain, the democratic candidate.—_ ' Indeed, I kept 4n open bar all day, for the democratic candidate, without receiving, or expecting to receive, a cent for it. It is however true, that, after the election, I was sued' for the five dollars given me by the friend of Buffington, :but if the law itit mentioned would prove any thing, it would kove that I refused to deal out the .Buffington liquor " Lawrence" also says . that the "candies date for Sheriff; and his relatives at Luth eraburg," opposed Pr. Lorain. If I done him any injury, it was .by spending 'my time and money for him, and whether that benefitied him, or injured him, is' not for me to say. I cannot think, however, that the author of such falsehoods has the sanc tion of the Doctor for their untrance. Having thus pronounced the Charges, so far as they relate to, myself, false, I have done with the subjecti, merely adding, that I have never opposed the regular ticket,— Even ,the eloquence of a lawyer failed to move' - me from:Ahe regular' nomination when a distant relation of the writer of "Lawrence" was a candidate against the ticket. _ Yours, respectfully, P. W. BARRETT The quantity of lumber surveyed at Bangor, Me., averages annually about 200,000,000 feet, the value of which can not fall farshort of $3,000,000. The quan tity 'got to market this year is less than iast-year, owing to the great draught in the early part of the season. • The demand has been great, and the prices of all qual ities have run a dollar higher per thous and feet than last year, so that although the quantity will .fall short by some 15,- 000,000 of feet, the sales will amount to nearly a quarter of a million dollars more than last year. . [The. following notice of an' ingenious invention hy . an industrious meetanie of our 'town, is taken' frem a late number of the SeientifiaAmerican.] , •The common heavy.. cast-iron sleeves, which are much used• axles, are ex l'ceedingly clumsy,. so 'that many prefer to use the' _wooden axle alone, while others are made entirely of iron. A contrivance, to *hate this defect has been made by Thanes Mills, of. Clearfield, Pa., who has taken measures to secure a patent. The e. invention is intended to introduce the use of a sleeve or tube made of light wrought iron plate, which grad'u'ally tap ers , so as to fit on the tapering end of the spindle to which it is bolted.. A.sheulder collar, with ''two strape, fits. tightly on this ,sfeeve, 'and serves also as 'a shoulder for:the 4ixle to which it is secured' by a screw bolt and nut. This arrangement materially strength ens and braces the spindle. The sleeve is made by cutting a thin piece of boiler-plate to tho proper size and shape, and then, af ter heating it, passitig tho plate between three tapering rolleiti, one of which is ad justable. The edges of the tube are after wards brazed together, a couple of rings being employed to secure it from opening during the process. Scientific American.
