The emigration to California, Salt Lake
and Oregon had commenced passing the,
Fort before Cat. K.' left. SieknesS had
almost entirely disappeared, but there was
the usual amount of quarrelling and diffi
culties among the companies. At tho Fort
there was an abundant supply 'from. the
surplus of Government stores offlour and
meat, but the past Was not prepared to sup
ply sugar, coffee, Sze. There Was how
ever no destitution between them.
About a days journey from Fort Kear
ney, a couple of men in pursuit of buffalo,
got astray from their party, when they
were overtaken by some Indians. The In
dians approached them and offered to
shake bands, and as the white man, a Mr.
Daily offered his - gun in the left, the Indians
attempted to take it from him. Ad' he
,jerked away and turned around, the Indi
ans shot hifn through thebody,,and he ex
pired soon after. A shot was fired at his
companion, but without effect. The Indi
ans then retreated taking the mules of the
party with them.
The companion of Daily buried him as
well as he could in the sand, and came in-
to Fort ,Kearney, when Capt., Warton,
of
the post, sent out a detachment of the men
to trace if possible, the Indians, and inter
the-body. Capt. K. was unable to learn
tho.name of Dail's companion. This af
fair occurred , on- the south side of the Plat
te, and it was not known by what Indialis
the outrage was committed. .Tbe party
corning in were detained some days at the
Big 1314 e -by high water. The grass on the
plains was abundant, and the health at
Fort Laramie and Kearney was excellent.
Tremendous Storm at the South—Great Loss
of Life and Property.
MoBILE, Ala., Aug. 30.—We were vis
ited on Thursday and Friday with one of,
the most severe storms that has ever been
known in this section of the country.
The rain fell in torrents, and overy little
stream is swelled into a largo sized river.
A number of lives were lost, and the des
truction of property by land and sea is im
mense. The lower part of the city is en
tirely submerged, and 4 number of vessels
have been sunk.
The loss is estimated at a million and a
half to two millions of dollars.
POTATOES IN KENTUCKY.—The Louis
ville Courier of the 13th, says: we heard
of a contract yesterday, to deliver 2600
barrels of potatoes, ready for shipment, qt
95 cents a barrel. The potatoe crop is
most abundant in this portion of Kentucky.l
A gentleman in Humers Bottom has rais- 1
ed one hundred and trenty-five barrels of
, merchantable potatoes 'to the acre.
