• Died in this place on the 7th day oil
May, DAVID DICK McLuon—only, sorl,of
tho Rev. Dr. Alexander McLeod, of Clear
field—in the sixteenth year of his age.
Thus aro we 'culled 'with sorrow, and
yet with rejoicing to record the departure
of another beloved friend—Struck down
while yet the dew of his youth was upon
him, like the early and tender flower
• nipped ero it was fully blown by the • uu
timely and chilling frost. ''lle was truly
the son .ofinany sorrows, as from his early
years he was afflicted with disease \of the
heart which affected Alis entire constitu
tion and eventually brought him to a pre
mature grave.
His sickness was marked in a . most
wonderful degree with the graces of tho
christian character; and seldom have we
been permitted to witness, even in the
death of the aged who have "come to the
grave like as a shock of corn cometh in
his season," the same calm resignation
• and submission to the will of God ; with
"a desire to depart and be with Christ,"
which attended the sickness and death of
• this dear boy. "Lovely and pleasant" in
. his life, he was none the less so in his
death. The severe bodily trials which he
• eadured seemed to purify, as with fire,
the soul, and work for it "a far more ex
ceeding and eternal weight of glory" when
it should be releasedlfrom its "earthly
house and have a building of God, an
bduse not made with hands, eternal in the
Heavens." llis dcdtli-bed experience was
good and sufficient evidence of his inter
est in the merits of a Redeemer, and adds
but another testimony to the power and
value of that religion which can alone fit
us for death, judgment and eternity.
Ho greatly enjoyed the conversation ofl
his christian friends, end the ghostly min
istrations of the. "ambassadors of Christ."
With them ho wrestled in prayer and
prevailed until in the second hymn of
praise and feasted upon the broken body
and shed blood of the Saviour. And hay
ing "finished his course"—having "fought
the good fight" and having kept the faith;"
ho fell asleep in Jesus :
"Gently as to night's repose,
Or nowt% at set of sum"
Having the testimony of a good con
science; . in the communion of the Catholic
Church ; in the confidence of a certain
faith ; in the comfort of a teasonable,,reli
. gious' and holy hope; in favor with God,
and perfect charity with the world.
Its swect as yenr.by year we lose
Friend's out of sight, in faith to muse,
flow grows in Paradise our store "
and if the heathen could belieVe that 'whom
the gods love die young,' may not our
hearts be comforted with the animating
reflection,. that the soul of our child and
brother and friend was pleasing to the
Lord and therefore ho hastened to take
him away. We drop the tear of affection
, nto remembrance over his early grave and
breathe the prayer that like him the young
may remember their Creator and Saviour
"in the days of their youth," while the evil
days come not, nor the days draw nigh
when they.shall say "I have no pleasure
in them. Come to him who will save
you from the temptations of the world,
who will sustain and comfort you in the
storms of life and will finally with all his
sainted dead bring you to the better land—
. the land of unclouded brightness and eter
nal sunshine.
"In Heaven there's rest," that thought bath a power
To @cutter the shades of life's dreariest hour ;
Likes sunyearo a dawns on the stormy sky ;
Like itio glimpse of home to a traveller's eye.
'Tis the balm of 141103;4, of sorrow tho cure.
The hope that deceives not, the promise that's sure.
-flow sweet to the neary."ia hearmn there's rest;
The tears are all dried from th 6 eyes of the bless'd
And the smiles that succeed are mu dazzling am
bright
That none but akpirit could dwell in their light
0! not like the smiles that here glow on the cheek
To hitlo the deep anguish nu language can speak.
' In Ilenven there's rest." earl leo happiest hour,
Fades softly away, like a morning flower;
THERE, fadeless the bowers ineuded the skies,
'films, it bath no end, and timo never, flies.
Tfirna, nature is freed from its earliest stain,
THERE, love Mull no sorrow and life bath no pain
"In Heaven there's rest" oh, how deop that repose!
Life's bitterness pnes'd, with ii follies and woes,
Its passions all hushed like the waves of the deep
When tempests expire nod winds are asleep,
And only soft airs and sweet odors arise
Like the evening incense that flow to the skies.
Tugns:, sounds brontlio sweet music, "in Ilenven
there's rest ;"
I long to escape 'Co flint land of tho blessed ,
Inspired by the prospect through life's busy thy,
To Act and to E MUM 10 WATCH and 10 PRAY;
''hen gladly exchango when the summons is given
Tho tumult of earth for the calmness of Heaven.
