On the night of the 4th inst., occurred
the most destructive conflagration that the
city of San Juan de Nicaraugua has ever
witnessed. At least one-third of the most
pupulated section of the city has been de
stroyed by the devouring element, inclu
ding) the .largo and valuable property
known as the United States Hotel, owned
by P. F. Mancoses ; dwelling house and
counting room of Mr. S. Shepherd, agent
Royal Mail Steam Packet Company; dwel
ling House and store of Don Francisco
Granias ; do. of Pedro Pous ; do. of Domin
gues ; besides a large number of houses
occupied by natives, and stores owned by
merchants in Granada.
The city was not provided with fire en
gines. Calt. Platt, of the Albany, sent
Lieut. Armstrong with a crew and engine
to their assistance, Capt. Fade of the Ex
press with his crew, ropes, &c.; and thro'
the exertior.s of these gentlemen and their
men, at length the flames were arrested.
In this heavy calamity it is a satisfac
tion to state that no loss of life has oc
curred.
Shocking Affair at Sacramento.
An unusual excitement was created yes.
terday by an occurrence at the Station
House, in which a man by the name of J.
Q. Adams received a dangerous wound
from a pistol while in the hands of a lady,
whose daughter he is charged with having
abducated and ruined. -
The circumstances of the case are brief
ly stated : About two months since the
mother with her daughter left Philadelphia
to join herhusband in this country. Adams,
who had known the family at home, trav
elled most if not all the way to San Fran
cisco with them, arriving on the Monu
mental City several weeks since. On the
Istlynnus, and during the passage up, hd i
succeeded in making an impression upon
the girl, who was but seventeen years of f
age, and a week ago induced her to leave
with him for this city, where they have
stopped at the Sutter Hotel and the Queen
City, registered as man and wife. .
The mober, who came up - on Wednes
day, discoVered their whereabouts yester
day, went to the Queen City and discov. ,
ered herdaughter. The incidents of. the
meeting were such as would naturally
transpire 'between a fond parent and her'
child, separated under such painful cir.
cumstances. The guilty cause of their
affliction avoided them, but was taken into'
custody .by the tpolice. At three o'clock,
the' mother, a woman of unusual intellect
and stkength ,of purpose,, proceeded ,Sp the
Station House, and having obtained an en
trance,on the request to speak a few words
with the prisoner ; found him sitting in the
ante. room in company with an officer.—
Apprciaching sliciasked if he ,intended
to marry her daughter ; and receiving an
unsatisfactory iesponie; drew a.pistol and
discharged the ball entering the right
side near the tenth rib and lodging proba
bly in the abdomen.

MARRIED.—On the 22d ult., by the

DIED.—On Thursday the sth instant,
of the Typhoid Fever, Mary R. daughter
of John and Elizabeth Dale, of Bradford
township, in the 18th year of her age.
The deceased had but a few days to
mourn the loss of a little brother, who di
ed Jan 3d., until she was taken suddenly
and violently ill, from which she never
recovered. Her disease was sore and very
hard to endure; frequently removing her,
as it were, from time into eternity ; and
yet, it was borne with that patience and
resignation which is seldom endured by
one so greviously afflicted. During a
sickness of almost twenty one days, and
suffering mostof that time more than she did
on the day of her death, there was not a
murmuring word or complaining look ; and
although as much attached to life perhaps
as any one, did not expect or .yet express
a desire to live; and when speech tailed
her, she would cast' her eye§ and raise her
head towards heaven, as an evidence that
it was her tidal resting place, rind shortly,
very shortly to be obtained; and as the
hour of her dissolution drew near, when
she was about to be ushered into a purer
state of existence, her mind was calm and
undisturbed.
She was speedily and unexpectedly call
ed away from her relatives and young
friends—cut down in the flower of her
age, and in the vigor of life. Few itrjhaps,
promising so fair for long life, are so sud
denly called from their connections ; but
disease had takenlhOld of her, for which
there appeared to ho no remedy, and ush
ered her into,eternity.
Conneetions and acqunintences when
meditating upon . .her departure will think
of one
"Who in itOi beauty (hid,
And put on immortality."
So frequently are we furnished with bi
ographies of happy deaths, that the healthy
and playful youths seldom lay it to , heart.
But, young reader, will, you pass this by
without inquiring about your own prepara
tion to die? Do us the.subject of this me:.
