TUC FA unca. TO lit Air FIOiEN PLANTS.---TO pre spire vegptabile kite, after havingbeen fro zen the same precaution is necessary as in the case of animals. Sudd©n elevation ofi temperature, by application of heat, proves fatal in both eases. When the, noses of French soldiers. became frozen and lost all feeling in their retreat from Moscow, they were preserved by rubbing them with plow. The, restoration of vegetables fro zen while alive is to be accomplished by the application of cold water, but not when the sun is shining on them. For reasons that are here made obvious, early Yorks and other things should be planted on the north side of ridges. That portion of trees standing on the north side of a wall and rising above it, so aa to be exposed in early spring to the ac tion of the sun, has been known to be kill ed, while the residue, shaded by the wall, and therefore acted upon by the more gradual elevation of veneral temperature, has escaped uninjured ; on the principle that is known, that, if a man's feet are frozen, he will loose them if plunged into hot water.— Verb. sap. sat. Profits of as Acre of Carrots. Francis Dodge, Esq., of Essex county, Mass., raised 3411 tons of carrots on an acre, which at 56 lbs to the bushel, make 1380 bushels. The rows were 22 inches apart. One pound of orange carrot seed was sown by a machine. The carrots were hoed three times and weeded twice ; the last hoeing just hefore thp tops covered the ground. They were dug with a spade ;1 the tops carefully saved and fed to the cows, the tops being at the time knee high. The expense of cultivation was as fol : 'lnterest on land at 6 per cent., $7 20 Ten cords of manure, $6 per cord,* 60 00 -Spreading the same, 3 00 Plowing, 2 50 Harrowing, 2 00 Plowing and raking, 4 00 Seed, 1 00 Sowing $l, hoeing and weeding,ls, 16 00 Digging 21 00 ' Total expense, Value of crop, 344 ton• at $7 per ton $241 60 Value of tops, 7 00 . Treatment as follows:—Give a / mild cathartic, such as castor-oil or some gentle pills, every two or three days, and .when there is fever present, spoge the body with weak ley, and give some simple tea to promote a perspiration, such as cat nip, sage, balm, &c. ; and for the putrid symptoms give good brcwor'syeast, mixed with cold water; one tablespoonful! of the former to two tablespoonful) of the latter, for children ten or twelve years old, and younger ones according to age ; to be re peated from three to five times a day; and use as a gargle yeast and cream or milk, equal parts, sweetened with honey, and gargle the thoat and mouth frequent ly with it ; and if the throat is much swollen, poul tice with yeast and pulverized slippery • lm; continue the above treatment until well.
