A friend in 'Brady township writes us
us follows :
Tear Sir :—I seen in your paper of
Nov. '2,'!l. a notice .of a bear hunt. Now,
sir, we can beat it all hollow, if you allow
us to change the animal from a bear to a
panther. Three of our citizens went to
near Wilson's, on the Sinnemahoning, for
the purpose of hunting panthers. They
succeeded in finding three, two of which
run up "trees," whilst the third (the old
one) went into a den in a ledge of rocks.
After sending in their dog and, making
other ineffectual efforts to get her out,
Jackson Long, a young man, with gun in
hand, went in a distance of
about sixty
feet, and shot her down—being'within
four feet when he shot. The other two
were readily despatched. The names of
the hunters are Jackson Long, Joseph
Dale, and moat) . Ogden. Now, sir, beat

BOSTO N, Dec. 18.—The following re
lating to Hungary is interesting. A grave
event lies taken place among the Austrian
corps de armes in Holstein: Many of the
regiments composing it consist in u great
part of Hungarians, and among them are
many. young men of noble families, who
are compelled by the Austrian Govern
ment to serve as private soldiers, in spite
of disasters drawn down on unfortunate
Hungary by the revolution.
These soldiers cannot repress' he hatred
which animate s them, or their desire for
anc w revolution. The presence inErig
land of Ex-Governor Kossuth has greatly
contributed, of hog, to excite . the senti
ments 'of hatred of the Hunprian soldiers,
and'an armed revolt, of which. the„ den

arrangement are to be, that Great Britain
shall construct a canal within a giver" pe
riod, shall erect such fortifications us Mex
' ico may designate, and shall assist Mexi
co in case of an invasion of the isthmus,
or of any attack being made on her right
to the lands situated thereon. Mexico
will bind herself to keep a garrison of two
!hundred men on the isthmus, to aid tray

; ellers. garrison forts, &c., and will make
over to Great Britain all the tolls and other
advantages to be derived from the canal.
The foreign merchants at Vera Crux
have protested against being compelled to
pay any higher rate's of duty on imported
goods than those established by the sched
ule of Avalos at Mammoths.
An electric telegraph has actually been
established in Mexico. It extends from
the capitol to Nopalucan, a distance of
[Oily leagues. It works admirably, ac.
corriing to the newspapers.
The Pope's nuncio, Monsignor Clemen
ti,; had arrived at the capitol, after having
!been joyously greeted on the route from
Vera Crux. Ile was received in state by
president Arista.
The new project for the settlement of
the public debt by a sinking fund is still
before Congress, and a number of sections
of the bill have been adopted;with various
modificatit ins.
The Mexican cabinet had transmitted to
Congress a proposition Ibr a law to raise
an " army of reserve," to consist of 78,-
000 infantry, 20,000 cavalry, and 9,000
artillery.

tinent, before the great Republic of the
United States. My principle in this res

eign right to dispose of its l own - domestic

The plurality wife system is in full
vogue here. Gov. Yonng is said to have
as many as ninety wives. He drove
about the streets a few days since, with
sixteen of them in a long carriage-4our

bosom. It is .said - that Herber C. Kim
ball, one of the Tribune. Council, has al
most an equal number'; among them, a'
mother and her two daughters. Each
man can have as many wives as ho can
maintain, that is, after'the 'Women have
been culled and picked by' the head men.

honor of being introduced by his Excollen
cy, the Governor, to several of his wives;

Two MEN DROWNED.—A most melan
choly occurrence transpired on Se nd a y
last, the rehearsal of which is painful.—
Two young men, brothers, named Spear,
one aged 17, the other 21 years, on that
day went out" on the ice, on Mill Creek,
above Mil. Hollenback's Mill, about one
mile above this Borough, for the purpose
of fishing. They cut a hole through the
ice, and succeeded in taking a single fish,
when one of them broke through—the
other brother attempted to rescue him—
broke in also—and both were drowned.
It occurred in sight of their father's resi
dence.

How sad, how heart-rending the catas
trophe to the afflicted parents. Two sons,
one approaching, the other grown to man
hood, just left home in fulness of health,
and soon their lifeless
. bodies carried back.
And how painful the reflection that the
sad accident occurred when it did, in con
nection with when it did, on the day set
apart by the Sovereign of the Universe,
