I.f.wis Gnvlord Clark died on Monday night, at Tienn >nt, on the Hudson, alter a sickness of only a few hours, from a paralytic stroke. So has gone another of those old gonial writers that lent brilliance to the literature of the country nearly forty years ago—the early days of the X. V. Tribune and its predeces sor. The Seu- Yorker owed much to the poetic and versatile writings of the two Gaylord Clarks, Lewis and "Willis. Atkinsons Casket of Phil adelphia and almost every other liter ary paper helped to disseminate their beautiful thoughts. Here is a poem from the Xeic Yorker of Dee. 31. 1830: A wail tor the pacing year'. As its funeral train sweeps by; While the northern blast, with it- sounds of fear, Hotvls along the darkened sky. And winter it- peal of triumph rings 'Mongthe crashing boughs of the forest kings. A dirge for the seasons dead: For spring, with its opening flowers— Fair summer, whose verdant -lieeii was spread < iver iiiliside, vales and Itowers— And autumn, magnificent autumn, too, Willi it- waving fields of golden hue. A sigh, a.- memory's hand From the past it- trophies tears, And before us in solemn mockery stand The hopes of our earlier years; The hopes that were angel- at their birth. But perish'd—as jieii-h the joy- of earth. A fear for the loved—ami dead— The young and the g.-nile hear;-si: They were with us but now the year ha- sjied— Alas, they have all departed. And the ruthless wind that round us raves. Stirs the lifeless grass on their lonely graves, A lament for pleasures gotn ' For the pleasant dreams of youth. Win n the heart was young and around us was throw n The mantle—we thought—of Truth; 'Till Time swept o'er the spot where we stood, And the mantle w ,s borne on its res" less Hood. A wail: a dirge: and a sigh: For.the seasons and hopes that have flown; A lament for the pleasures of youth that lie On the bier of the old year strewn: But the par for the dead —the loved of yore- Let it fr> ely gush: we -ha' 1 see them no more. ♦ The Grace of Gladnes3. One spring of ghtdne-s is whole some and noble work. No man is glad w hen li\ ing to himself. Man is made (or the life of communion; the perfect form of human life was the life which found its blessedness in giving itself to mankind. There is physical gladness in the gl-'v of a healthy body. That glow is the fruit of enei'cvtie action. Titus, -lag gard-. 1-igg: :ower ot kings and Captains to help it; that their nplift td haml- kept llea>. m- gate open; that their constant -ervicc wn- a Heaven'.-ladder ly wbieli angels of God descended upon the world. Let loose the wings of your loving minis try ; stir your soul to some work which -liall scatter bles-ings. If mu would taste joy, frosh and pure from it - fountain, do good, be ready to communicate. It is this which make- the -ottl instinct with vigor, aglow with health, and radiant with joy. Mali is crippled, a half-devel oped in ing, until his unscitish min istry is drawn forth. When he has tasted the joy of doing good, he is like the lame after IVter's touch, lie goes out into the great temple of life, walking and leaping, and praising <;od. Tt\ it. If life is sad, make it glad by service, service that -trains your power, that a higher power can only make you strong enough to render, but here we touch the deep perennial fountain of gladness—the joy of the Holy Ghost. The joy of a man who believes that God is with him, is exhubcranl, irrepressible. The delight of doing the will of God, to those who have tested it. masters all other joy. "My meat and my drink is to do the will of Him that sent me. and to fiuish His work."— Loudon CongregalionalUt. A N interesting fact showing that the people are husbanding their-pen nies a little more than usual is shown in the fact that, on the horse mil roads in most cities the daily receipts show a falling otf quite marked. That will he good for the health of the people as well as their pockets. Ex-Go \ kKNOR Clrtin is to lecture iu Wellsboro before the Llermaie So ciety, oil the evening of November 2otb.
