| A terrible tragedy occurred on April
9th m the town of Alfred, Allegany Co.,
iX. Y. We take the substance cif the ac
count from the Sabbath Reorder of the
' j 17th:
Alvah B. Carr, son-in-law of Horace
' I G. Witter, went to the house of the lat
ter, where at the time was his wife and
a little son about four years old. Taking
this hoy he went into the woodshed. His
wife L dlowed liiin, and as she opened the
door she saw him in the act of striking
i the hoy with an ax. She screamed and
fainted. This called other persons to
the spot, but they found the child dead
with his skull flushed in and his head
j nearly severed from his body, and the
man with his throat cut in so effect
ual a manner that lie died in a few min
utes. Domestic and financial troubles
were evidently the cause of the horrible
j deed.
