A transaction took place Tuesday, commencing at Fmjiorium and tenni nating at Port Allegany, which show?, on the part of one of the jiarties con cerned a reckless disregard for the safe ty of society. A man belonging in Olean, whose name our informant did not learn, had been at work for a person in Emporium, said to lie a physician. Tuesday, feel ing indisposed and show ing some signs of an eruptive disease, his employer placed hinr on the 2:05 train on X. Y. A P. R. W.. telling him to go home, that nothing was tne matter with him but a bad cold. Arriving at Prestonville the conductor of the train liecame alarmed at the man's appear ance and telegraphed to Port Allegany to have a physician at the station when when the train came in. Dr. Hogarth was notified, and on the arrival of the train he examined the man. who by that time was beautifully spotted, and pronounced it an undoubted case of smallpox. To say there was some rapid "getting out" of that car and away from that station, and that Port Allegany was slightly seared, would be putting it very mild. ' The m.in was left at the station, and tht train n. -td on. When our inform ant ieft th Pr: Alleganians were talk ing of sending him through to Olean by private couveyanee. Ifthepers nat Em]>orium who placed him "ii the train knew the character of tlie disease, his contact is deserving of the severest censure, to say the least. I, ATE it. —They raised iifteen dollars and sent the man on to Olean. People begin to talk of new sugar and maple syrup. Mnethpori has g< t an Express office. What is to hinder Coudersiort from having tlie same convenience? We cer tainly can see no reason why we should not have one. They show the expiration ot the time the paper is paid for. For instance, —a year orvolume containing fifty num btn, —ahui the figure.- 24-21 are writ ten, they denote that tlie subscriber has paid to Vol. XXIV. X"<>. 21. and any one can tell, by eoiii{iaiiiig the figures on his paper with the number of the paper it is on. whether he is in arrears and how much. It is our intention to work into the advance pay system, believing it to be best, not only for the subscribers, but for the interest of the paper, as no other method w ill enable us to make the im provement necessary to keep abreast with the times. We now call on all who were in ar rears at the commencement of our com bined series to pay up at once, and should any such miss their usual weekly they may understand that prompt pay ment will renew its visits. Let it be understood by all that the most perfect assurance of eventual pay ment will not furnish ink or pajier nor meet the ex]ienses daily required to keep our press in inoeion. We imixt pay in ci-du and to enable us to do it our sub scribers MI ST do the same.
