Candidates for Governor
For the last month or two we have
refrained 'from discussing this subject
preferricg to be a spec:tater t the•
speculations of our friends of the dif
ferent sections of the State, hoping
thereby to be able to- cone to a deli-
lute. conclusion as to.the most popular
candidate on our side. We ate in
clined t.ll believe fr en the tenor of Inn

vass the State during the summer, pro
vided he is nominated with a proper
degree of unanamity by the Conven
tion of March 25th, Mr. Bell, of Erie.
seems to be a very popular_ candidate
among the Harrisburg letter-writers ;
but without any diSpar-geinent of the
capacity of that gentleman. we•may I, e
allowed to assert that his claimS upon
the party are not so strong by any
means as those of ,Tudge Wilmot. The
latter gentleman _does not seek the
nomination, but places himself in the
hands of his friends, to be nominal , -1
or not, ad libitum• The Erie Ga
gette urges the nomination Of Mr. Rail._
though not with any display of false
confidence in its accomplishment, hut,
as we are happy to see, with a prOper
regard to the best means £m the suc
cess el the party. Should Mr. Ball
be nominated, we will give him our
hearty support, while at the same time
we frankly acknowledze that he is not
our choice. He is a man, however,
who is well_ posted in the poli!ical his
tory of the State. and has capacity
equal to any man; but we are scarcely
inclined to believe that he would noire
and harfmonize our forces so complete
ly as would Judge Wilmot.
The Democratic Convention met on
Monday last, and we have teneon to
believe that Gen. Packer is the nomi
nee. • This gentleman will unite the
entire fierce of the ogus Democracy,
and if we ale to be successful we must
place our wrow, est m•m in the field as
banner bearer. Such, we belit•ve
