THI WILY TO ONT ON IN THE WeilLD A working man, some time ago; published his own biography, one of the most iaterestiug little volumes that has appeared during the present cen bury. leis as follows:=-"It may, to some, appear like vanity in me to write What I now do, but I should not give My lab truly, If I omitted it. When filling a cart with earth on the farm. I bever stopped work because my side bf the tart might be heaped up before, the other side, at which was another Workman. I pushed- over what I had heaped up, to help him ; so doubtless he did to me, when 1 was last and he first. When I have filled my Column br columns of a newspaper with matter for which I Was to be paid, 1 have 'never stopped, if I thought the subject required mote explanation, because there was no contract for more pay ment, or no possibility of obtaining more. When I. have lived in a bar.: 'rack-room, I have stopped my work, and taken a baby from a soldier's wife, when she had to work, and nursed it tar her, or gone for water for her, or bleaned another man's accoutrements, thciugh it was nu part of my duty to do so. When I have been engaged in political literature and traveling for a newspaper, I have gone many miles but of my road to ascertain a local fact, or to pursue a subject to its min latest details, if it appeared that the fublit. *ere unacquainted with the ates bf the case; and this, when I bad hit Work, was most pleasant and profit- Ible. When I have Wanted work I have accepted it at any wages I Could get, at a plough; in farm-drain ihg; stout quarrying, breaking stones, tab Wood cutting, in a .taw pit, as a nlVilian, .or a soldier. In London I i htve cleaned out a stable and groomed It babtnitn's lierse fur a sixpence. But 111 had not been etintent to begin at VIA beginning, and accepted shillings, I ibbuld - have arisen to guineas. I Mile lost nothing by working; what. bud' I have been doing, with spade or pen; I have been my own helper. Are rati prepared-to imitate? Humanity is always the attendant of sense, folly ante is proud. A Wise divine, when prfaithing to the youths of his con, gregatioti; Was wont to aay, 'Beware Of being golden apprentices, silver ,journeymen, and _copper itiasters',=. Th% only cure for pride is sense ; and dial only path to promotion is cottde- Sennsion. What multitudes bare been ruined in their prospects by the pride bf their boats! Arty, then, young then, and forever, with self-foppery, and empty pride, idle habits, and ex sensive associates—stop and conquer. ink in spirit and rise in oppulence. Be faithful over a few things, and be Made ruler over many." READING AND WerriNc.those ac totriplishments are the most excellent and most worthy of cultivation which contribute most largely to the happi liege of others. 1 place that of read ing well before every one of the arts Which uaiially•are so designated; and certainly, had 1 the fairy's power to bestow hn those I loved the gift which should most endear them to others— _ not of course including good principle, good sense and good temper—l would - give them the power of delighting their own family circle by reading and talk ing well. The former art especialiy is culthated far too little for tho health as well as the happiness of a young vretnan t so mutt' is it neglected, that probably twenty can sing pleasingly for every one that can read agreeably.. Vet wo cannot doubt theta voice for bunging is comparatively rare, and that almost any one who chooses to do so, can lead so as to give pleasure.—, Perhaps there are two reasons.for the general neglect of this charming ac complishment. In the first place, wo are far too apt to cultivate most care fully that which is to please in society, and to neglect those arts which can tontribute to domestic happiness. We sing for our acquaintances, to excite the admiration ; or, it may be, the envy of people who see us but, seldom, and Walla not greatly care if they net•er intW WI again. But in being able to lead well a good poem or play, or area the debates in parliamenti we Ire only likely to give pleasure. to an invalid father or brother or perhaps a 'group of younger brothers and•sisters. lint to increase the happiness • of but one of our home circle ought to be a Source of far more satisfaction so us than the applause of any stranger Whatever, lo wile tWay the dreary hours of pain and sitkness—to charm a group of young listeners into forget: fulness of the rein or snow that is pre:- tenting them from enjoying their Usual sports=-these are objects ive can Ito easily attain, and from which We shall derive such real happiness ; that they are well worth a little effort.
