3MaSTERS. BECaiING POLI:34CIMIS The following lotter, appeared-last week- in the Nirtivital Eht, the able and consistent organ. of the anti-slave ry sentiment at Washington. The au thor is a local clergYman in the town from which he dates his letter. He is Of Democratic antecedents—one of those • men who laboring with 'and - imong the people, know well their sentiments : RAYMOND, `.II:, April 2 41852. In past times, say twenty-five years boo and more, the Methodist, Baptist, Tree Will Baptist, Christian, and Uni versalist ministers of this State,. em bracing nut far from two-thirds.of the 'whole number in the State, were most ly Democratic in polities. The Con gregationalists, Presbyterians,a nd Uni tarians, were mostly Whigs. In those times many ministers of the Democrat ic party were active politicians. They discussed politics in the circles • they :tuet; voted at the polls, were often ;chosen legislators, made fervent pray 'ers fur the perpetuity and spread of -out glorious liberties at military re -Views, Fourth of July celebrations, and at political conventions. When Jackson, Van Buren, and others were candidates for the PreSidency, some ministers nttended meetings at which political addresses wcr:e given, and offered p 1 aver. SI, late as ft:so, at a political meeting addresed b s't mop orators ;f the Democratic party, a Min ister (Jl'ered prayer, which was con bidered• 'sir valuable that it was •pub lished in a political paper. guy one Who read it could but t - ee that. it was quite political. Democratic ministers within half a dozen years, have attend-. td, its members, political conventions for the nomination of State, county, and other officers: Even in the pres ent year, in one county, a minister Who was the only one that voted with the Democrats in that part ell the Sta:e, attended the caucus just befor? the election„ and was-an active 2:l;riber. In all l'.!e,e and ether might. la: !:':tried, there was no cola plaint that ministers were nleddling with poi:tie , . \o, no; that was all very well. They were patriotic, and "fur their country." - • . But since 1 :3r) a change has been taking place. The Democratic party proving recreant to the true principles of Democracy as they were maintain ed in the days of Jefferson, ministers have left it. The party becoming prostituted to the upholding of Slave :ry and to the extension of it, preach ers have been leaving it, so that at 'present but very few support it. Per haps out of G5O ministers now in the state. there ale not fifty that arc of the Democratic party. Hundreds of the ministers are opposed to Slavery. They are f Temperanco, Peace, and Lilf4Aty. They do nut make these the subject of their discourses ; they pray for these in bond:,. and occasionally some of them make God's vielated law speak out in tones of thunder. This is more parlieularly the case on an nual fast and thanksgiving days. For merly those days had become seasons for amusement and feasting. so that churches obtained but' few hearers. Now more attend. sut while ministers have bean Wit coune, some of the people have l:een ;n agony. Ministers could be active in, politics while I)einocrats, but to be active for the cause of Free dom, Uh, "that alters the case F' And such ado, perhaps, NVIIS never heard on such a subject I,el;sre. "Church and Stao united!" "Ministers preach ing politics !" Ministers electioneer ing !" and the like, have been vocif erated loud and lono..;.- Editors of • political papers have called upon the people to leave the miniArations of such politiCal priests, and some of the people have declared they would not hear nor help support such ministers. - But the heavens have not tidien, as yet. Quite a number of ministers in the State have gone into the Know Noth ing Of this 1 have nothing to say, as to defending them. A." little time will show whether the course was wise or not. . The cla'ss wholave denounced min isters for - meddling with politics, as described • above, and who have left tneeiings, now feign themselves as hungry for the 'Word of Life. They tnay say in public that Slavery must be let alone ; that the Ftpzitive.Slarp Act iA a law and must be obeyed ; they.may attend 'political conventions, if they are of the Democratic party ; but •farTher than these 'they must 'not go. If any know of some such out of employ', mill they not send them -This way, that. these few bleating sheep mattered here and there ,without a shepherd, may cret something to sus taiti their pour famishing souls? J. r. A - TOUCHING CUSTOM.- A common tuitOm,i? Paris, which impresses' a stranger iavorably, is that of lifting or taking off the hat when a funeral pass e's'. 'A :writer vn this subject relates the felh;Wing : . - Some years since, we were one of that rushing crowd ever pouring up Broadway. When in front of old St. rauro, Fill. eyes were attracted by the appearance of the crew of the French war veoki4; l Rolle Poule, which then risitrd lh Trnittql states under the command' of alsi Prince r The CreW werein their naval, uniform, bright and 'beautiful, and were , saun tering along' seeing sights, - "All at once they stoPped and form ed.a. line, faced inward, and, uncover ekqUisite and touching was the scene when we discotered in that thoughtless, . busy; hurrying 'crowd, a man of, ibreign birth, evidently poor and. friendless, under whose arm was a tiny coffin, and by his side the strick en mother. They were in search of a burial place for their babe, and were jostled and:unheeded in that gay tor rent of humanity, until they met those 'hardy, tempest-toSsed. mariners;; who on the instant, with bared heads, stood in silent respect, while the sacred ash es of the unknown infant were passing. Such are French .Manners." The newspaper is* law hook for the indolent, a seimon for the thoughtful, a library for the poor. It may stimulate the miist indifferent, it may also instruct the moz.t. profound. • • New Goods for the Simmer Trade. W.
