—"The snake," it will
. be seen, is
scotched, not " killed." We cannot ex
pect any such vote from this State on the
Main Question, nor may we calculate
with safety on the votes against the bill
of all the Southern Members who have
voted it into Committee ; while the ab
sentees, if present and voting, would .
weigh heavily against us. But the mon
ster has received a staggering blow, which
can and must be followed up wiga ener
gy till ;he last breath is beaten out of his
carcass. Let public Meetings be multi
plied'on every side, and memorials flow
intoOongress from every quarter. The
bill cannot be got out of Committee under
four weeks;and meantime Connectict
and Rhode Island will speak otit. Let
no muscle be relaxed until the last ves
tige of danger is dissipated—until ihe
last demagogue is convinced that to at
tempt to break compacts for the benefit
of Slavery, and turn over to Bondage an
empire long consecrated to Freedom, is
very far off the road to the Presidency.
One-month more of effort, acrd the tri
umph will be complete!—N.Y.Tribune.

The q derstgned, Trustees of the Cou

official and personal duty to invite the at
tention of the Public--of parents in partic
ular, to the rising and useful character of
this Institution 01 Learning. When invited,
a little mole than a half-year ago, to the
superintendence - of its affairs, we found it
depressed and still declining. We requested
Mr. J. BLOOMINGDALE to become Its 'Princi
pal Teacher, - and entrusted its organization
and other most onerous affairs to his discre

proved him to bo faithful, efficient, and
practical--just such an instructor as this
community need. The number of pupils
in the school Is now over sixty. - We refer
to Mr. Bloomingdale's advertisement for
information as to the terms and conditions
on which pupils ' re admitted, and for other
facts of interest; and recommend - the insti

THE subscriber would 'announce to the
public that he - has removed to a aew
store, next door north of J. W. Smith's
Stove and Tinware establishment, where
he has just opened a large week of good*
for the tall, and winter trade. The stock is
marked at the very lowest cash figures, and
at such prices as cannot fail to suit those
who study economy in buying. I intend to
.adhere to the one price system, believing
it to be the only fair mid honorable mode of
doing business: and by taking a straight
forward course, hope to receive a liberal
share of public patronage.
Produce taken of its cash Tuttle.
