Four liandred Miles Up Stairs
"Reading about electricity, lightning,
and the telegraph, the other day," said
uncle Peter, " reminded me of a curious
story I once heard, when I was in Eng
land."
It seems there was a newspaper in the
city of Glasgow, in Scotland, which em
ployed a London correspondent. The
correspondent made it his duty to gather
the news every day and send it to Glasgow
every night by telegraph.
Ile made an arrangement with the op
erator at a certain office, by which news
was sent to Glasgow at a reduction by the
year.
One ni ,, ht he arrived at the lower door,
at the foot or the stairs leading up into
the telegraph office. The door was lock
ed, and he could not open it.
The telegraph office was way up to the
top of the building, in the sixth story.
The operator had a bed there, to which
he retired promptly at three o'clock, and
it was now half pest two.
The operator up stairs yawned and
looked at his watch. " Jinkins won't
come to-night," said he; " I may as well
ere to bed." And there was poor Jinkins
all the time pounding away on the door
at the foot of the long stairs, unable to
get in
"Hill:, up there:" he cried looking
at the window of the telegraph office, that
glowed with light " Hullo, Jones !
Somebody has locked the outside door,
and I can't get in.
" 'What's the row ?" said a policeman
coming alone.
rm locked out," said Jinkins.
" Here I've got a batch of the most im
portant news for my paper—a murder,
three fires, and a riot—and the door lock
ed in my face, and I can't get in. What
will I do?"
So the policeman began bantring the
door, but Jones, the operatoi, up in his
office, was as unconscious of the tumult as
if it had been done in the moon. Ile was
whistling to himself and yawning prodig
iously.
"Why don't you go to some bother
hJfftee ?" asked the policeman.
"No authority to use any other line,"
said the correspondent. •` Ah I've Lot
it :" he added, and before the policeman
could ask what it was, the excited Jinkins
dashed off down the street as if a mad do_
was after him.
Jinkias rushed breathlemiy into h-

and ask the operator titers-. w tele. , -rarih
up here to Jones, and bid , et me down
stairs and let .me in."
The operator roared with lat.tirter at
this, but went at once to his instrum , mt,
and began rattling away at a treat rate.
This is the message be sent
" Glasgow. Wake up -Tones. Station
X. Tell him Jinkins, at the foot of the
stairs, can't get in."
Jones was looking at his watch again,
and concluded that he had better pat out
the lights and go to his little bedroom
across the hallway, when clatter, clatter,
went his instrument.
" There's Glasgow calling me," said
Jones, and hurried to his instrument and
ticked off :
" What's wanting ?"
Back came the answer :
" Jinkins down stairs—door fast—let
him in."
Off went Jones down stairs with a
rush; and at last the anxious Jinkins got
up and sent off his news.
So you see how a man sent a message
through a solid door, and up four pairs of
stairs, four hundred miles around, and by
way of Glasgow, and all within twenty
minutes.
" Wasn't that four hundred miles up
stairs ?"

ADDRESS
To the Nervous and Debilitated.
Whose sufferings have been protracted from
hidden causes, and whose cases require prompt
treatment to render existence desirable: Ifyou
are suffering, or have suffered, from involun
tary discharges, what effect does it produce upon
your general health? Do you feel weak, debili
tated, easily tired? Does a little extra exertion
produce palpitation of the heart? Does your
liver, or urinary organs, or your kidneys, fre
quently get out of order? Is your urine some
times thick, milky or flocky, or is it ropy on
settling? Or does a thick scum rise to the top?
Or is a sediment at the bottom after It has stood
awhile? Do you have spells of short breathing
or dyspepsia? Are your bowels constipated?
Do you have spells of fainting, or rushes of blood
to the head? Is your memory impaired? Is
your mind constantly dwelling, on this subject?
Do you feel dull, listless, moping, tired of com
pany, or life? Do you wish to be left alone, to
get away from everybody? Does any little thing
make you start or jump? Is your sleep broken
or restless? Is the lustre of your eye as bra-
Han t ? The bloom on your cheek as bright? Do
you enjoy yourself in society as well? Do you
pursue your business with the same energy? Do
you have as much confidence in yourself ? Are
your spirits dull and flagging, given to fits of
melancholy.? If so, do not lay it to your liver
or dyspepsia. Have you restless nights? Your
back weak, your knees weak, and have but
little appetite, and you attribhte this to dys
pepsia or liver-complaint ?
Now, reader, self-abuse, venereal diseases
badly cured, and sexual excesses, are all capa
ble of producing a weakness of the generative
organs. The organs of generation, when in
perfect health, make the man. Ind you ever
think that those bold, defiant, energetic, perse
vering, successful business men are always
those whose generative organs are in perfect
health? You never hear such 111C11 complain of
being melancholy, of nervousness, of palpi tati on
of the heart. They are never afraid they can
not succeed in business; they don't become sad
and discouraged ; they are always palite and
pleasant in the company of ladies, and look you
and them right in the face—none of your down
cast looks or any other meanness about them.
I tit, not menu those who keep the organs tune
led by running to excess. These will not only
ruin their constitutions, but also those they do
business with or for.
Dow many men, from badly cured diseases,
from the effects of self-abuse and excesses, have
brought about that state of 'weakness in those
organs that has reduced the general system so
much as to induce almost every other disease—
idiocy, lunacy, paralysis, spinal affections. sui
cide, and almost every other form of disease
which humanity is heir to, and the real cause
of the trouble scarcely ever suspected, and have
doctored for all but the right one.
Diseases of these organs require the use of a
Diuretic. HELMBOLD'S FLUID EXTRACT
Bucrw is the great Diuretic, and is a certain
cure for diseases of the Bladder. Kidneys - , Grav
el, Dropsy, Organic Weakness, Female Com
plaints, General Debility, and all diseases of the
Urinary Organs, whether existing in Male or
Female, from whatever cause originating, and
no matter of how long standing.
If DO treatment is submitted to. Consumption
or Insanity may ensue. Our dash and blood are
supported from these sources. and the health
and nappiness, and that of Posterity, depends
upon prompt use of a reliable remedy.
