Saturday, December 4-, 1869.
Wise and Otherwise.
Ott a pine. wood shed, in alley dark,
where scattered moonbeatos,sitting through
a row of tottering chimneys and awning
torn and drooping, fell, strode back, and
Ibrth, with stiff and tense drawn muscle
and peculiar tread, a cat.
Ills name was Norval ; on yonder
lieigiaboring shed his father fought the
cats that came in squads from streets be
yond Dupont,in search of food and strange
adventure.
. Grim war lie courted; and his twisted
tail, and spine upheaving in fantastic
curve; and claws distended and ears flatly
pressd against a head thrown back defi
antly, told of impending strife.
With eyes a gleam, and schreeching
blasts of war, and steps as silent as the
falling dew, young Norval crept along the
splintered edge, and gazed a moment
through the darkness down, with tail awag
triumphantly.
Then with an imprecation and a growl
—perhaps au oath in direct vengeance
hissed—he started back, and crooked body
like the letter S, or rather I_7 inverted
stood in fierce expectancy.
'Twos well. With eyeballs glaring and
ears all aslant, and open, mouth in which
two rows of fangs stood forth in sharp and
dread conformity, slow up a post• from
out the dark below a head appeared.
A dreadful tocsin of determined strife
young Norval, uttered; then, with face
unblanehed, and mous.ache standing
straight before his nose, and tail flung
wildly to the passing breeze, stepped back
in cautious invitations to the foe.
Approaching the other, and with prep
arations dire, each eat surveyed the van
tage of the field. Around they walked,
with tails uplifted and backs high in air,
while from their months, in accents hiss
ing with consuming rage, dropped brief
but awful sentences of hate.
sept.i.o.4-thr
Thrice around the roof they went in
circle, each with eye upon the the intent
ly bent; then sidewise inovihg, as is wont
with cats gave one lougdrawn terrilie, sav
age caterwaul, and buckled in.
The far flew. A mist of hair hung
o'er the battle-field. High above the din
of passing wagons rose tit.: dreadful tu
mult of struggling eats. So gleamed their
eyes in frenzy-, that to 'me, who saw the
conflict from a window near, naught else
was plain but fiery stars that moved in or
bits most eccentric.
An hbur the struggled in tempestuous
might, then faint and fainter grew the
squall, of war, until all sound was hushed.
Then went forth with lantliorn, and the
fields surveyed. What saw I?
Sis. elaws—ouc ear—ot teeth, parha.ps
a handful, and save fur, naught else ex
cept a solitary tail. That tail was Nor
cars—by a rinf , kuew't. The air was,
but we'll let the matter pass. That tale
will do without the ear.
HERE is a case for lawyers, which oc
curs in the town of Genesee, New York.
It seems that Dr. Cutler's barn stands on
the line separating his land Iron) that of
a neighbor. The neighbor has a number
of cows iu the adjoining lots and the cows
have been in the habit of reaching their
tongues through the boards of the barn
into the manager of the doctor's 'burst:and
stealing hay. The other 'day the tongue
of one of these cows was bitten off by the
horse, and the question now is, whether
the owner of the cow can obtain damages.
The animal was on his premises when she
lost her tongue; but then, certainly, the
tongue was trespassing upon the doctor's
side of the line.
