Letters which pass from great wen to
great men are often wise to owlishness,
and so successfully discursive as to treat
beautifully upon everything but the point
at " issoo."
_ SALT POINT, Feb. 10, 1867
J. BILLINGS : ESQ.:
I am constructed by our association to
inquire of you, and solicit a reply, if you
could read a discurse before our lyceum
this winter, and if so, at what time on
what subject, and upon what terms.
Most respectfully yours,
E4n.A. Cor. Scc'y.
POMPEY, Feb. 12th, 280
SMITh MY DEAR :
This day at, ten o'clock A. M., I cuin
in contact with your letter, and was real
glad tew hear from yu. How do you like
being Cor. Sek. of a Ly-Associ ? It is a
light, pretty bizzieess.. and
.don't require
much capital.
Let me ask if you are any relashun to
Jake Smith, the batter. If you are, for
get it, for Jake is a common cuss.
The Smiths are a good family, and pre
vail more permiskus that envy kind ov
folks that i kno ov, but it would be unnat
ural in the highest if thare want sum,
whare they was so tbieh, that wus wuss
than the rest.
septl-69-tfw
Did yu ever read history, Ezra ? If
yu didn't yu will be surprised tew hear
that John Smith married Pokerhontas,
the dauter uv.Powhattan, the injun boss.
The way this happened was so : Smith
was about hitting slowed, when Pokerhon
tas went in and and fell flat on him. Old
Powhattan giv it up, and Pokerhontas
had Smith, and Smith settled down and
went into the injun bizziness, in a small
way on his own hook.
This is the grist ny the story.
'Tis one uv the most affektingest trans
actions on file.
Yu ought teu read history, Ezra; it
will learn yu informashun, and give yu a
knoledge ov edultashun.
I forget to state that John Smith lived
somewhere in Pennsylvany, at the time
his transakshuu with Pokerhontas took
place, and if he ain't dead probably lives
there now. There is one fust rate thing
about history ; tt is ahvus true; if it ain't
true; it ain't history, so if yularn it oast,
yu never have tew unharness.
But most poetri, and piktorials, and
novels, lie wuss than an east wind (the
fuller a man gits ov them over night, the
more room thar iz in him the next day
for sum more.
John Smith, who bad the transaction
with Pokerhontas, had an immense in
voice uv bops; !bare is thirteen ov that
name in our town this morning, besides
several who hav either died or gone to
Denver city.
Did it ever strike yu, Ezra, that death
was one uv the most remarkable things
that could happen to a man ?
A man may be ritch, and kno history
just like slapjacks for, breakfast, and be
handsum, able to lift a ton without think
ing, but death beats awl these just as easy
as biting crackers.
Death seems to be as far as a man can
git ; when a man acquires that thoroughly
his amblishuu seems to be satisfied.
One man can be riteher, and lift more
than another, but he kant be any more
deader
Lam glad there is one thing in this
world, that is euuff for man.
Speaking of man, Ezra, dew yu consid
er him a suckeesS yet, or has be got tew
try again ?
History has a good deal tew say about
man, that don't allude co his slickness.
Ade w, Ezra.

AT a recent examination of a Scotch
farmer, on his sister entering the box of
to be examined, the following conversa
tion took place between her and the op

Agent—" flow old are you ?"
Miss Jane—" Oh, weel, sir, 1 am au
unmarried woman, and I dinner think it
richt to answer that question."
a IThe Judge—" Oh, yes, answer the gen
tleman bow old you are."
Miss . Jane—" Weel a weel, T. am fifty."
Agent—" Are you not more ?"
Mi . F.S'Jetie—‘• Weel, I am Sixty."
The iequisitivo went still further asked
if she had hopes of getting married, to
which she replied :—Weel, sir, I widna
surely, tell a lie; I Mune lost hope yet."
And she scornfully added—" But I wid
na marry you fur I am sick and tired of
o' palaver already."
The examination proceeded.
A LITTLE boy met his Sabbath school
teacher, and innocently asked her if to say
" coffer dam" was swearing.
She replied ‘• no my dear—what makes
you ask that questicinl''
His answer was: " I saw an old cow
down the street yonder; she was nearly
choked to death, and I thought she would
'coffer datn' head off."
" "MEAT do you mean, you little ras
cal r exclaimed an individual to an im
pudent youth that seized him by the nose
in the street.
" Oh, nothing only I am going out to
seek my fortune, and father told me to be
sure and take hold of the first thing that
turned up."' :

heaven of the strong minded woman is
" where buttons grow in their proper
places, and where men,cease frombother
