It is alact worthy-ofmentienthata ma
jority,of farmers: sons, instead, of; follow

some other calling. Not that jt . ::is 'uni
versally so, but especially in t1:10 . East it
is noticeable that the, farmers!' sons who
follow it:4 he footstep :of their father are
a galinerity,: - queSiia . n naturally
arises, why is this? g Why -do we'
,have
cause to notice 'this' with farmers more
than-others? While it is',very true that
it is necessary, in ordento fill up the ranks
in the other walks of life, that many must
come from among farmers.' sons, yet it is
not necessary that aMkjaritY shoUld. And
while it is also True that there may be
many among the citber :Tailings, who .are
better adapted far "farmers, and should
-take -the place of that' pro
fession. (and'pr.gbahly: in a 'measure do,)
yet it is noticeable, especially in the Arts,
that generation after generation follows in
the footsteps ofthcir ancestors.' Now why
is it that the fanner, with one of tbe best
of occupations,- and'pOstessing adrantanges
over*almost' eVery other r . Calling, cannot say
would ; seem Altai there
must be a fault sumewbert, either in the
farm or the' - farmers; and as2re can dis
cover no reason' Why the farm, with all its
-adrantag,esrshonld'unt attact' the farmers'
son, he 'right ly 'undeiStangis ,These ben
efits, we concluded-that the fault licswith
the farmer—which to -My mind is the only
true conclusion at which we can arrive.
It is then some fault in the farmer's edu
cation of his son.' '
-Although the'llit tiler desiregand strives
to make his sou otalie same mind as him
self; he everlooks'or neglects 'one impor
tant part in his education, and though he
has been never, so watchful, the farm
becomes distasteful to. the son. From the
time Alm child approaches youth, he grad
ually• becomes accustomed to " chores "
and light work on the farm, or, as is too
often the ease, is driven into it, and is
wade to feel it'a burden ins'ead of a duty
and a pleasure. As a natural consequence
the child 'thus driven, often rebels, and is
Lou often managed in a way which is no
credit to the farmer. As he grows older,
more work is Irust upon him he is com
manded and obeys; - feeling himself little
more than slave, and of course takes little
interest in the work, and thinks the flirin
and farm-work• a.. drudgery in general.
Thus he approrielics manhoOd. He 'feels
little better than a servant, and is often
treated as one. His taste and wishes are
consulted in nothing. :He knows little of
the father's plans in regard to the farm
and consequently take's no interest in them.
He sees little of the world out side of his
own town. The pleasant thought connec
ted with the farm is toil from morning
till night. lle lOoks about him and dis
covers that it is different with the mer
chant and the mechanic, and those • with
whom he has come 'in •contactin, lother
callings, and the farni becomes
_,distaste
ful to him. He has never been' shown
the advantage' of'the farm—on the other
hand has seen- but its disadvantages, he be
comes dissatisfied anthuiscontented; and
leaves the farm forever: '
=Li

'Chis is but an or4inary, picture of, the
case; though it is a-dark one, yet it gives
AO idea of the•way in which• the son he
comes dissatisfied with the, farm. The
fatherfirst fails to instil into the mind of
the child that he is working for kindness
—in other words, "to please - his father.
There are few children who will net love
to work if they know this. Then he ne
glects to treat'his son as a- companion, a
helper and a counsellor - instead of servant.
He fails to impart to him his plans of im
provement and such things as will interest
him and fix his :attentionon the faun, and
consequently he fails to awaken .his inter
est in behalf of the farm. He forgets to
teach the immense advantages' and ben
'fiis,of the farm, as compared with other
callings, and lastly, fails to show him
enough of the world that he may under
stand these things for himself."
Fanner should understand these things,
and endeavor-to-their sons on the farm.
I have attempted to give little argument . .
Much might be said,` but the subject
needs it not. Every farmer can see the
case in -its true light if he but chases.
It seems indeed a great wrong' that far
mers should have a scarcity of help, when
the merchant and the mechanic have au
overplus. .Farmers stop - and think—it is
well worth your : while. If you but think,
you can understand; far.better than I can
explain, and profit by it. •'• •
