Cljt trausiria kpg. 2 S Columbia, Pa. Saturday, July 31, 1869. Air AIM advertising will bo considered CASH, and collectable at. any time alter the first insertion. TILE campaign has opened in Pennsyl vania. The two' great political parties who so often have met in conflict before are again arrayed against each other, and, under leaders of acknowledged strength and power, are trarshating for the great siruggle of supremacy at the ballot box. While we have never felt more sanguine of a contest resulting in a Republican tri umph, still it is eminently unwise that we should build upon our own strength and with arias -folded calmly await victory, making no effort to secure,it 11 1 syend doubt. The enemy has been whipped un mercifully time and time again, but `each political castigation at the polls only made them more eager arid more determined to triumph, and up they come in each can vass as solid and resolute as though they had never felt the shock of a reverse. Possibly, the Democratic Party is to-day as well organized and as well prepared for the struggle as they ever were, and will conduct the canvass with a wicked energy born from the fresh recollections of the many disasters and defeats they. have of late suffered. On their part victory is es teemed so highly itnd as a result sodesir able that nothing honest or dihonest will remain undone to help on their cause. 'lt is in knowing this that the Republicans should at °nee prepare to meet and repel them step by step. With a large majority in our favor a guarantee that the ballot box is shielded by just and wise legal pro visions against those frauds and oatrages which have been a source of strength to the enemy, leaders who inspire confidence and are especially worthy the suffrages of all honest men, and with a platform broad, liberal and patriotic, there can be no pos sible doubt of our success if we at once or ganize for the work—for with all these grand advantages, work, earnest, harmo nious and well directed work must be done to secure our triumph. Organization is needed. None will deny the great impor tance of doing work in concert, by clubs and associations. Let every ward, bor ough and district of the State have their Geary and Williams clubs in the field early and thus infuse life and enthusiasm into the campaign. One good Republican club of earnest and determined workers will he as effective in each district as an hundred thousand dollars of the preen backs promised to be expended by the Democratic Crcesus, who proposes to buy - his way through to the chief office of honor in the Commonwealth. Let us have clubs at once organized, and thus early set , the ball rolling, and keep it in motion till we have again secured an old fashion tri umph. A CLERGYMAN, it is stated, has been engaged in swindling a Hartford Insurance Company to the tune of $2,000 ; and he , is not to be prosecuted and sent to the penitentary, as he certainly would be if he were not a " minister of the Gospel." We don't know What right insurance com panies have to compound felonies, but, if this be a mutual corporation, all the insur ed are cheated, some of them perhaps being ill able to bear the loss. It is bad enough for such'a company to allow itself to be fleeced, but to hush up the matter, after a'gross swindle, isn't a course likely to recommend the corporation pursuing it to the confidence of the public. JUDGE Perishing, according to Shep hard, has passed through the Legislature without carrying with him even the smell of smoke. It might have been added that Asa Packer passed through the Rebellion with a holy, horror of the smell of gun powder, only the comparison with Gover nor Geary would have been unpleasantly odorous." ,Did. , Gm. 13. VASTION, colored law yer,'formerly'of - New York; has just been admitted to practice at the bar of the Criminal Court of the District of Colum bia. We have now colored clergymen, doctors, lawyers, schoolmasters, printers and clerks; yet there are still aplenty of people who insist substantially that the Black is not a human being; that he is of the same kind with the gorilla; that he 'must not vete, though he may pay taxes; and that, in an incredibly short space of time, his race will become extinct. Every day the monkey theory is reduced to a still deeper absurdity; and these ethnol ogical sciolists iu trying to prove the im beCilitY- of the African seem to be in a *fair way of demonstrating their own. " • WE have been expecting to get our sup ply of tea from China over the Pacific Rail road, but it seems likely that it will not be long necessary for us to scud to China for our tea, but that we will get it from , the' tetifields of California.
