The Bus' la efiS A r Enameling Female
Beauty.
A New York paper.says
. .The enam
eling female faces %and „husts is' now a
branch of masculine busitiless and is quite
lucrative. A chiropodist on Broadway
devotes a good deal of time and attention
to this line of trade, while ,a man named
Sausson imitates-his example. The belie
who would enameling go is first examined
with a microscope, and any rough hair or
fuzz which exist upon the cheeks or bust
is at once removed
, with liniment 'or plas
ter, medicated soap or scissors or tweezers
even. Being thus prepared, the cheeks
or bust are coated with a fine enamel,
which is composed of arsenic or
,white
lead or other ingredients made into a semi
paste, and pleasantly scented. Au
nary coat of enamel will endure for a day
or two; but to render the operation of any
permanent effect the coating process has to
be repeated twice a week for varying pe
riods, a ccording to circumstances, and pen:
celing of the eyebrows, so as to render the
contrast between them and the whitened
Nee more striking, is sometimes included
in the enameling process, while the eye
brow is also trimmed or shaven, just as the
moustache in a man. It costs a good deal
of money to be well enameled. The prices
of enameling vary, but the average price
list of the various stages is about as fol
lows : For enameling the face to last once
or twice, from 810 to $l5; for enameling
the face and bust temporarily $l5 to $2O;
for enameling the face to endure one or
two weeks, from 815 to $25; for enamel
ing the face and bust, to last about the
sortie period, from 825 835; for pernm
neatly (this is for six months) keeping
the face iu a well-enameled condition from
$200 . 16 $250' . ; iiii'd — fOr keeping the face
and bust both in the same pleaSmg state,
from $4OO to SGOO. So that from its very
cost alone enameling should become fash-,
ionable. A. married belle of the Fifth
Avenue Hotel, two married belles of the
Metropolitan Hotel, a well-known actress,
and three or four prominent young ladies
of Madison Avenue,-are, at the present
date, the most enameled ef the darlings of
society; but the fashion is extended. In
due time enameling will be cheapened, and
at last, doubtless; there will be enamelists
not only on,Broadway but on the Bowery.
Frank. Blair's Latest Appearance.
The officers of the Army and Navy of
the Gulf lately partook of their annual
banquet at Long Branch. /The affair was
arranged.ona giand scale, only one event
occuring to mar the pleasurers of the time.
It-was this : , When Major General Prank
P. '•Blefir was called he said ho would say
a word fora people who had not yet bad a
voice raisedin their behalf. " I will speak
of the people who were once our enemies;
and I know that , when I speak of them
before soldiers I speak before those who
will heartily respond. Those against
whom we contended, whom we aspersed as
rebels, and. whom Ive triumphed over as
well. They were great and generous peo
ple, they were worthy 'of the steel of our
best. We have heard hereof Farragut
and of Sheridan, but we.shall yet hear of
Lee and Stonewall Jackson. [Hisses and
cries and great confusion.] ' Who is it
dissents ? [Number of voices—" We dis-
sent," " I dissent," " Think of Andersdo
ville and Libby Prison,"] It would be
little merit for - us to have triumphed over
a mean enemy. [The speaker was again
interrupted by a storm of hisses.] I speak
of them as our late adversaries. [Cries of
" Traitors.") Are :there no voices to be
raised for them ? [Cries of " Yes" and
"No," great confusion, and cries ..of
" Traitor.")
Admiral Farragut here decided, that to
introduce-anything which interrupted the
harmony' was out of order.
General Blair sat down with a flushed
face. It is due . to him to say that he had
apparently enjoyed the hospitality of his
hosts, before he arose to speak, to a de
gree that rendered it difficult for him to
express his ideas with his usual clearness.
His conduct was universally condemned,
and especially by his best friends. The
excitement produced by this little episode
soon blew over, and General Blair left the
room.
