Strange Advertisement.
For four or five mouths past we -have
noticed a singular advertisement in the
Boston, New York and Philadelphia daily
newspapers. it, is as follows :
Don—l am well, but we are in affliction, and
long for you that we may comfort one another.
There is a letter for `Dod' at the Post Office,
New York. MA."
This advertisement is continued day
after day, and, as we have stated, has been
continued several months. The New York
Sun says it has received over one hundred
dollars for printing this advertisement;
and other journals have probably received
as much more. The San Francisco Times
publishes the same; and in referring to it,
says it is also published in the newspa
pers of China and Japan. "What does it
mean ? Somebody is in trouble, evidently,
and they want somebody to comfort them.
The advertiser must have expended over
a thousand dollars -in advertiseing for
nod."
GEN. CUSTAN, iny an interesting re
port or his recent campaign against the
Indians, after stating how he had re
cr captured two white ladies held by then
as prisoners, and wade subject in captiv
ity to terrible indignities by the savages,
says :
" The Indians express themselves hear
tily sick of the war, and are willing to go
to that part of the country which has
been designated for them, and are ready
to submit to the decision of the govern
ment authorities." He further says :
" We have taught the Indians that they
are safe from us in no place, and at no
season, and also, what some of our own
people may doubt, that the white man
can endure the inclernencies of winter as
well as the Indians." He says that the
country and the hiding places of the In
dians are now better known, and that he
has many officers in his command who
could conduct an expedition there with
out guides.
The Balloon Voyage Across the At-
MOM
MOMS. Chevalier, the distinguished
mrouaut who lately arrived in New York,
for the purpose of making a balloon voyage
hence to Europe, has leased Landmanu's
Park, Sixty-severith street, and Third ave
nue, where he will make several ascents
during the next two months, prior to his
final departure on his great transatlantic
voyage, which will he on the 31st of
July.
More than 100 applicants have been re
ceived by M. Chevalier, from persons de
sirous to accompany him on his perilous
trip. The price fixed for the passage, is
$2.50, and not all who offer themselves at
that price, will be accepted by the Profes
sor:as compagnons du voliare, as he wishes
to take with him only such persons as are
capable through mental and physical-qual
ifications, of assisting him in his scientific
observations, for the sake of which, chifley,
this daring project is undertaken.
MONEY is said to be the "root of all
evil !" but we are all anxious to get as
much of this " root " as we possibly can,
and willingly incur the risk of all the evil
branches that may spring from it. And
who will say that it is wrong ? Is not gold
the "open sesame " that admits us -into
the charmed circle of " Upper Tendora .?"
What are genius, virtue, honesty,or integ
riti ? Valuable auxilaries, if you have
gold for the principal; but utterly vain
less standing alone. How seldeat we see
a person admitted into what is called "good
society," merely- because he possesses the .
" cardinal virtues," while, on the other
hand, if he chance to have gold, or its
equivalent, no matter what may be his
principles, society opens its arms to re
ceive him, delighting to de him honor.
We pretend to be republicans, and'in a
certain sense we are ; • and yet we are as a
nation, greater. 'worshippers of Mammon
than any other people under the sou.
Others have pride of caste, an aristocracy
of birth, but nowhere is the worship of
gold carried to such an extent. Does
such a course tend-to elevate and refine a
nation? or does it degrade and debase it,
by teaching that a man has only to ,make
money in order to occupy a prominent
position in society?
How often gold obtains place where
only honesty, integrity, and sound practi
cal sense should sit. flow are we to in
stitute reform in this matter? By recog
nizing true merit, whether we find it
clothed in royal robes, or plain home
spun ; honoring a man fur what' he iS, not
merely for what he is worth in dollars and
cents, by elevating men only as they de
serve, not because they happen to be pretty
good money making merchants. •
We do not pretend to say that it'does
not require talent to make money—for it
certainly requires shrewdness, • and bussi
ness talent jia order to get, rich ; but the
nobler traits of heart attd mind are often
lost of in the pursuit of wealth.
When we find those whose lives are
squarred by the golden rule, whoSe hearts
have been kept pure by the teachings of
the holy spirit, who are ever ready to lend
a helping hand to their fellow creatures,
whose ears. are open to the cries of dis.
- tress, who strive to cultivate the talents
God has riven .them, and live more for
others than, themselves ; we should show
these that we do not consider them out
casts freim society, even though they lack
- what is often considered -th e one thin..
needful--honey. Let us show them that
we consider them superior to those who
havepaaced their lives in fully, licentious
ne.v., or selfishness, even though the lat
ter may count thousands, where the former
counts hundreds,
