Young Mei'.
Let. us have your ear. You have just
emerged from the vale of Childhood. You
have culled the bright flowers that gar
nished your path-way, weaving then
,into
chaplets which you imagined were em
blems of ones more enduring; reveled in
in the bowers of beauty, innocence and
pleasure, and feasted the eye of hopeful
imagination upon dazzling and enraptur
ing visions of renown and glory.
The hand of time has passed this golden
period upon the dial-plate of your being.
Fancy with its rainbow illusions has be
come solid fact, and romance, like a wave
at play with the winds, has sank into the
depths of stern, actual reality. Those
glowing pictures of undisturbed ease, con•
tinuous prosperity, unimpeded progress,
crowding friendships and thronging honors
have faded into blank canvass at a single
glance of your life-destiny. The rollick
ing youth is now the sober, earnest, think
ing man. Care has placed its iron crown
upon his brow- Misfortunes are begin
ning to test the metal of his composition.
He is pressing the boundaries of the
higher sphere of human action. Duty
commands, trusts are to be discharged and
responsibilities are to be met. The sun,
that surrounded him in other days with a
halo of brightness and glory, has veiled
its disc, and the horizon is murky with
gloom and doubt. Opposition has mar
shalled its fierce battalions for. his over
throw and annihilation. Jealousy with
venom clamors, rank suspicions and wicked
vigilance; malicious Envy with a troop of
green-eyed fiends, all eagerness for their
prey; viperous Slander with a tongue of
a thousand forks, each laden with the
virus of all the worms of the Nile; and
malignant Hate with passions implacable,
all arts of diabolism and steel of murder
are arrayed ou every side. Yonder cloud
and the sounds that stun the ear are the
smoke and clash of battle, the mingling
shout of victory and the cry of defeat. In
the thickest midst of those struggling,
grappling ranks he must woild his lance.
Friendships, once so warmly protested and
now so sorely needed, have disappeared,
as snow melts from the rock and as the
Iris vanishes from the firmament. Yet,
young man, with a brave resolution, pan
oplied in honesty and justice, and your
banner starred with truth, honor and in
tegrity, you are invincible. The same
Omnipotence, that mantled the forms of
the three men of old form the consuming
flames of the fiery furnace, will lead you
unscathed and triumphant through the
mad whirl of this strife.
Be manly, courageous, seli-reliant. En-
filade the dark front of difficulties, rising
up befbre you. They are cowardly foes
and will flee the field before an intrepid
charge. Turn them to your advantage.
Make them incentives to grander achieve
ments, nobler triumphs than you would
have attained without them. Then you
must conquer. It is the destiny of your
creation, the irreversible mandate of your
Creator.
I. 0. 0. F.
The commemoration medal for the 26th
of the present month is described as fol
lows : The order is represented by three
female figures—Faith, Hope, and Charity.
Faith, the central figure, with outstretch
ed wings, is assisted by Hope in support
ing an infirm man, who implores their
help during his helplessness. On the
right is Charity, upheld by Faith, and
reaching forth to alleviate the suffering
df the widow and her orphan. Above the
figures, and in the heart-shaped panel
which incloses them, is the All-seeing
Eye; at their feet is a head of Time,
which spread olive branches, emblematic
of peace and prosperity. Pendant from
the panel is a ribbon, with the motto of
the order, Friendship, Love, and .Truth.
