Last !Vi .Ii of a Dying Man
Mr. Eckerson, who died of hydrophia
at Saddle River, N. J., had to be held by
five or six. men, and during his lucid in-
tervals begged to kiss his wife, who was
very ill in another part of the house. A
short time before his last dreadful fit, he
pleaded so piteously to kiss her once more
before he died, and that risking the con
sequences, they took her to his bed. The
dying man carefully wiped the froth from
his face,,aml compressing his teeth tightly
to prevent any of the poison saliva exten
ding from his mouth, kissed the lips he
had so often pressed in love and affection,
and then resolutely turning away, after
bidding her adieu forever relapsed into a
dreadful paroxysm, and died.
Cattle Trade
Few people have an intelligent idea -of
the cattle trade of the United States.
Some interesting facts and figures on this
question were recently submitted before
the Social Science Association at Albany.
It was stated that the consumption of beef
in France was 910,000 tons; in England,
1,600,000 tons, and in the United States
2,000,000. One of the principal sources
of supply of cattle to the eastern States
And New York was Texas. When the
war broke out Texas had only 3,000,000
head of cattle; now there are 12,000,000
head of cattle in that State. The total
supposed value of all the cattle iu that
State was $10,000,000, and the total con
sumption amounted to 50,000,000 head.
In New York alone was $32,000,000
worth of cattle annually cousutned,besides
82,000,000 pounds of butter, valued at
$33,000,000; 72,000,000 pounds of cheese,
valued at $14,000,000 ; and 29,000,000
, gallons of milk valued at 57,000,000; a
total of $52,000,000.
The Nickel Coinage.
The bill before the House of Represen
tatives, in reference to a new nickel coin
age, provides that on or before Juno 1,
1869, there shall be issued from the
United States Mint the following pieces,
to be composed of copper and nickel, in
the proportion of not less than 25 por
cent. nor more than 33 per cent. of nickel;
a piece of one cent, to weigh one and one
half grammes (23 grains); a piece of
three cents, to weigh three grammes OR
grains) ; and a piece of, five cents, to
weigh five grammes (77 grains), with such
device as may be fixed by the Director of
the Mint, with the approval of the Score
- tarY of the Treasury. Such devices,
when adopted, shall not thereafter be
changed by , said officers ; and the pres
ent coinage of'one three- and five • cent
pieces, whether of bronze, nickel, copper
or silver, and the issue of the Treasury
notes of ten cents, shall thereafter cease.
' Any of the new coins are to be legal tender
in sums of one dollar in any one payment,.
The nd'sv coins are to be distributed in
like manner As provided for the present
coinage, which is to be called in under
,
such regulations'as may be made by the
Secretary of the Treasury. The bill also
provides ; for, the redemption in national
currency, in sums not less than fifty dol
lars, of the one, two, three and five cent
coins now 111 circulation.
