Au Editor in Trouble.
A Velocipede school is in operation over
the Belfast Joiwnal. The editor who does
not appear to Tai - ef-ably impressed with the
situation says :
If the building 'comes down, and our
cold remains are found, among the ruins,
let our friends remember that we died at
the post of , duty. Let no one who • ever
rode a velocipede come to the funeral.
Wantal—A man gifted in swearing, to ex
press our sentiments on:velocipedonkeyism,
the man who invented the machine, the
man who brought them here, the fools who
ride them and the landlord who lets a hall

Coloring Marble.
Some mouths ago an inventor in New
York, while seeking some means of making
barrel staves imprevious to petroleum, ac
cidentally used a piece of marble to wedge
the barrel he was experimenting upon,
into its place in the vat containing the so
lutionwith which be was trying to fill the
pores of the wood. On taking out the
marble he noticed that it was beautifully
stained, but threiv it aside without further
'bought. About a month later be picked
it up, examined it, tried to wash it clean,
failed, broke it with a hammer stroke, and
lo I the color had pexetrated the whole
tna. , s. The discoverey has been pushed on,
and it is now claimed that six hundred
different hues can be permanently impar
ted to marble.
A Reform in Court Dress.
Another titne-honored British institu
tion has fallen. The court dress is to be
altered, and her Majesty's male subjects
may henceforth enter the royal presence
in trousers instead of the traditional small
clothes in which so many generations of
statesman and courtiers have admired
themselves and Leen admired. The
form of the new uniform, says the Spec
tator, "_is, except in some non-essential de
tails, the-form of every-day dress, and so
is the etlor, but modifications have been
introduced a to material and ornament.
The alternative dress, for levees in partic
ular, is ordinary modern full dress, spoilt
as to form by a ridiculous gold embroider
ed straight collar- sod gilt stripe, but im
proved - by the substitution of velvet for
broadcloth." Young swells'are aghast at
the idea of wearing velvet trowsers, and
conservative Tory squires shake their
heads and cite the innovation as a new proof
of the rapid tendency towards democracy.
But the world will move en, and probably
in two centuries and a half from the pres
ent time the loyal Englishman wishing to
pay -Lis respects to his sovereign, will be
permitted to do so without tricking him
self in a costume which would be ridicu
lous elsewhere than at a royal levee.
It is also announced that there has re
cently been adopted a slight revolution at
the Tuilleries, where deputies have been
admitted to dine with the Emperor in
plain evening dress, and wi.hout donning
the usual court uniform. The Paris Jock
ey Club is said to be contemplating a se
rious change in another direction, and to
be about to propose a light colored frock
coat, lace handherchief, &c., to supersede
the present evening costume.
A Big Swindle.
Under the above caption c Bud the fol
lowing in the New York J...lening Mail:
Smokers of the old fashioned " cut and
and dry" tobacco are beginning to find
that the new system of putting all tobacco
in packages so as to have " met all the re
quirements imposed by law " lacks the
simple requirement of being fit to use.
The plan gives the large dealers an oppor
tunity to impose on retailers and their
eustomers, by putting up the filthiest com
pound., that can be called tobacco, which
is dampened to such a degree as to make
it weigh well, that it becomes musty and
makes even the veteran smoker turn from
it with-loathing. The law was enacted
because 'of - . the large revenue expected to
be derivhd from it, but the manufactur
ers of the cheaper brands are making use
of it as a cloak to one of the biggest swin
dles of the age.: Heretofore, a purchaser
could have the privilege of examining the
article before purchasing, but now he
must take the risk of, a sealed package,
that previous experience teaches him is
most probably a law-protected humbug. '
This "buying.apirin a -poke" may be
all very well for the revenue, but it is
death to the buyent. The law has barely
got into effect yet, but fortunes have al
ready been made from this national swin
dle. We have seen several specitinens of
the article, purchased at different places,
and in each and every case the
,tobacco
was such as no dealer would think of
weighing out for a customer, or would
even allow it to be in his store in bulk:
