There are indications that early in the spring, there will be considerable current of emigration to the Southern States, par ticularly from the region of the Ohio river. The rich lands of South Carolina, Georgia and the other Gulf States only need to be tickled with a hoe to laugh with a harvest. The great need of the South is capital, and this the North might easily supply, accompanying it, too, with skilled white labor, the mere example of which would -infuse new hopes and re newed life into the half bankrupt and wholly discouraged planters. We hope this emigration will take place, and, indeed, we see nothing to prevent it. General Grant proposes to be the peoples' and not the politicians President. Al ready we know that the leaders under Jeff. Davis arc willing to accept Grant, and a're . 3vorking zealously to bring iu the States yet tin-reconstructed. Mississippi is one of these States, and in her case lion. Albert Brown, the acknowledged leader of the Democratic party, says: With all our 'hearts we respond to the noble ecatiment of the President-elect— Let us have peace. It is the cherished hope of our bosoms, and the sincerest wish of our hearts, that we may have no more strife." Mr. Brown asks Congress to stand squarely by the Reconstruction me'tsures as originally passed, and assures us that the peo?le of his State will come up to them in good faith. There is, therefore, no ground fbr ap 'preheudiog disorders to any extent in the South. Now let farmers and manurac titrers from the North go down there— not as speculators and adventurers, but as bona fide business men, ready and willing, to rebuild the desolate houses and reculti rate the fallow plantations that have lain idle since the war. It is likely to be a good direction ; too, for thousands of idle people in our cities, of which New York alone might spare fifty thousand without missing them. Gr mnigranta, the Ger mans especially are turning attention that way,and as stein as they are fully assured of security of person and property, they will toutribute largely of their gold pieces mid their more valuable industry. Let us hope for brighter days among our Southern sisters. Tfie Catholic question- We copy the Following from The I'ro -9ress, a very liberal paper published in Brooklyn, N. Y. The question has agi tated the Catholic church for some years past. We 410 say , that no good, active, working member of the Masonic order can be a consistent member of the Catholic, church. And on the other hand, no act ive Catholic can be a consistent mead= of the Masonic fraternity : This CATHOLIC QUESTION is 100,13111 Z, ill/0 great importance in the Masonic world. The theory or the Catholic Church ex cludes the possibility of a man being both a Free Mason and a Catholic Christian. A large portion of the membership of the Masonic Fraternity, in New York city es pecially, are of the Catholic faith. The stricture is being applied by the church, and, as Masons who are Catholics, die, they are renouncing Masonry. We propose to publish the pastoral letter of Ills Eminence, the Cardinal De Donal, Archbishop of Loyns and of Vienna, on the ocemion of Lent, ISMS, in which he pro nounces against Masonry and declares that it is impossible to be at the sante tittle, a Cath olic Christian and a Free Mason. The document has never been published in this country. It Is very long, very able, and very interesting. We will publish it next week. Unpleasant as it may be, the issue tuns:. be Inet: cowardly to dodge it, and for our part we will not do so. Advantages of years. You arc getting into years. Yes, but the years are getting into you—the ripe, rich years, the genial, mellow years, the lusty, luscious years.
