One night, after I had hoe!) six months on
the Island, I was seated by the lire, waiting

Joachin was not in the hut, and I was ex

Suddenly I beard his shout outside, and
the next instant lie dashed into the hut,
banged the door to, and threw the heavy bar
across it. Just as he axed it, and had leaned
his shoulCier against the stout wood as an
additional support, there was a shock so
Leavy that the whole hat quivered and made
the door bend. Another Mllowed, then all
was still.
I sprang up at the tint sight of Joachin,
but the scene pas.Aud su gniekly that no word
had been spoken yet. Bat when atter the
second blow MI tile door, the attempt scent

native by the shoulder and shook him, for
he seemed wild with fear.
Ilullu, man !" I said, '• what is this?"
Ills appearance was ghastly. 'the old Gus

ped and cut by the thorns of the acacias.
llis race streamed with blood from the
many deep serinches, and perspiration
drenched lcis long hair.
"A. black tiger," he whispered. "It bus
chased me ueross the savannah, fur my
horse tired Out. It Es after inc. Ott, listen !"
Then, in the silence, while we Leld our
breath, alai Jotehia straimd toy hand
backwards and forwards, I heard the hard
snoring of a. tiger just outside the door. No
doubt of it. 'rite beast had singled Joachin
out, and let the horse gu free.
we listened, the direction of the
moved about, now up and down, aU
collipanied by raps against, t h.:. door, as if
the nahnal was resting his paws against it
as be raised himself on his hind legs.

At length we heard the sound of sera telt
ing, and I drew my Lime/wile. In a few
seconds a black paw, artited with terrible
crooked viaw was seett working on our
side of the door. I gave a downright cut,
which nearly severed. it, and the animal,
roaring savagely, threw himsell against the
wood again and again in rage.
Then another pause followed. Very soon
a noise upon the rout wed, as we had ex
pected, that the enemy tvos directing his
attack in that (lit ection, and I got utv old
gnu ready. As soon as I saw the animal's
fur I fired, and wounded i,iut, no doubt,
for he rolled fruit the roof, and we heard
lain fall heavily, Again and again he re
turned to the attempt, and every time I
ca u g ht a glimpse of his black anti shining
skin I tired.
His roaring wa-s terrible to hear, and Jo
:Wain, who II l'N'Cr had courage to Sparc, sat
on the floor in the corner, striving to close
his ears to the SOU nd.
All night the struggle lasted at intervals,
and every cruel: of the hut was tried by this
untiring toe. lie dashed upon the door, he
bounded upon the roof, scratching that
way, but never disturbed my fire ; he tried
the nails and door again and again. It rein;
an awful night, that's a fact; and 1, for my
;nut, did not. recover from the tier% MI6
strain for months.
With the dawn the tiger's effort, became
fainter. and at length ceased. When the sun
rose I took my gun and sullied out to meet
the creature in a filir light. I followed his
trail fur a tulle or more, easily guided by
the clots of blood which ht.:tined the grass
and rocks, Ile was wounded to the death I
plainly saw. At. last I found hint dead be
side the body of Joachin's horse, which he
must have destroyed-in the very last effort
of his rage, dying in the act,

it seems to US, merely a tuatter of taste and

not filthy enough to chew tobacco, nor to

As to personal appeaiDn cc you don't catch

how inconvenient a new still rope halter is,

ropes for tying cattle are frequently unsafe,

enough to keep securely. All this can be
remedied, and new rope be made as limber
and soft at once, as after a year's constant
use by simply boiling it for two hours in
water. Then hang it in a warm room and
