McCoole and Coburn, notwithstanding

General Tyndale.
The nomination of General Tyndale for
Mayor of Philadelphia, will meet the favor
of the best classeS - of - citizens. General
Tyndale is a 'man of spotless character,
enlightened patriotism, and fine executive
ability. We feel assured that if he 'enters
this canvass, it will be' to serve no selfish
ambition; but for the love he bears the
people and'institutions of this noble city,
and with a desire to see rooted out of it
abuses and extravagances which have
disgraced- it too long. It is a good sign
when the politicians are forced to give way
before such men, before earnest, self
sacrifieing workers. Wo know that General
'Tyndale has not sought the Mayoralty; the
place has'sought him, and if he is elected—
a result which is scarcely to be doubted—
the city of Philadelphia will hate a thor
oughly worthy head and-representative.—

STILL WORRIED
Are the Democratic Copperheads about
theii nominee for the Presidency, and in
vain glory talk of the 'Chief Justice as en
available personage for' their standard
-bearer in the great battle with 'Grant in
November 'next. '"Tis true, 'tis pity 'tis
true," that they have no' one in their own
now demoralized ranks in whom they have
a sufficient confidence to .place forward in
this their hour of trial, but are compelled to
seek a-reprosentativc (?) from the old Abo
lition, Black Republican party of the North
as a forlorn hope, hoping by thus-doing to
secure a sufficient number of the followers
of the Chief Justice to make a respectable
show of fight with the General who never
has been defeated. • Bet their efforts will be
'in vain ,•' they will be. overwhelmingly, ig
nominiously,defeated, and the country will
be made peaceful through those who over
came treason, 'and - secured liberty and
equality before the - law to all American
citizens.. As the •case• now stands, in this
city particularly, the Rebel-Copperhead
Democrats. are materially concerned, and
their contortions are pitiable in the extreme.
They read the handwriting of their over
throw upon the :walls, and see. but little
comfort in the figures of the Electoral Col
lege, which stands - •
For Grant • 0 14.
For Treason
- v -' Ile.
Thus 116 of the 312 electoral votes of the'
-States loom up as nlormidable majority to'
be overcome by those of the rule or ruin'
party, and will not be' easily done, though
they should purchase their representatives , '
from, that party which lately suppressed
them in their slaveholders' rebellion against
the National Government. Ido not believe
that the Chief - Justice will accept the Demo
cratic homintition, even though that party
should tender it to him at their Convention
of Slily the 4th, to be held in this city. And
even should'he do so, what guarantee have
they that - he will not stand upon the same
old platform of " Libdrty and equality be
fore the law to cat American citizens?' ,
We
expect to see the Deinocraey swallow the
hated negro, - notwithstanding his peculiar
'odor, in a short - timeorrid, then, the, drama
of Change " will be complete. , They will
do anything for power,
and in' the words of
Jeff. - Davis, expect by devouring these pre
cious morsels of "Abolitionists " to '.;get
rid of the rule of the majority" forever. But
their schemes will bo - loiled,"and' their nau
seous doses will, sicken' them-unto death •
before the .dawn . of-a' new year. Treason

None but the .ignoraut and, blindly pre-,
judiced, question the" fact that . the 'Union
party 'Will be victorious 'in November, arid'
that under the administration' of -Grant the
country will be secured that peace for which
we have prayed in'"vain ;under the reign of
a treacherous - Democratic ruler "or nclannis=
traitor', who was sworn- tcisee that the laws'
were faithfully executed.- - .Grant has, to re
commend him, many gocid qualities. In the
first place,he is the greatest military Gen
eral or this century.' Secondly, iu every,,
military position in 'which he .has been
placed •he ha s , shown the highest talent,
prudence and skill ; that in all his relations
with ,public. men he has done no foolish
thing.— Thirdly, that he has shaped hiS con
ductstrictest rules of discretion, and
his
by h
wisdom and ability have thus far proved,
equal to any emergency. But as a statesman
he is yet Untried, and may prove as great a•
failure in the discharge of the duties of the
President of the nation as,have most of his
Democratic predecessors. • General Grant's
acts have been of the 'right sort,. and now
that he is the.' choice of the-National party
for the position of Executive Magistrate of
the nation,- let him speak out boldly :the
faith that is in-him ' and his folltrivers will
rejoice. 'We do notexpect one of the Gen
' eraPs - ago to speak' on the stage, in public,
but we do - expect hint say , something oq
casionally, in- support of the principles of
his party ; and even 'though his words do
not attain that eminence of a Demosthenes
or Cicero, we would like to have them, and
promise to view his honest declarations
with any other than that of a critic's eye. .

TITE PRINVIPZES OF ENGLISH GICAMIIIAII,.
by ,T. B. Vickroy,,4.-, President of
Lebanon Valley College : J. A. Bancroft &
Co., Philadelphia.—This work, the result of
years of incessant labor of an accomplished
scholar and an able , teacher, is a logical
development of thelnadaniental principles
of Language. • Unlike older Grammars, it
teaches the analysis and construction of
sentences, just as they come from the pen
of the author, without supplying ellipses.
The rulesof syntax, twentyjourin number,
cover every 'known constructiod of good
English, without being marred by. excep
tions almost as numerous as their appli
cations.
The introduction gives many useful hints
=to- teachers, which,; if- carried out, cannot
fail t6"he highly useful Mevery_department
of instruction, and the outlines, at the end
of nearly every lesson, are invaluable as
disciplinary exercises.
On the whole, this little Wok. bears the,
stamp of sound scholarship on every page,
unfolding the intricate constructions of our
vernacular with mathematical accacy and
logical simplicity. - w•
Teachers and students may congratulate
themselves that Gra trnitr..liaS at, last been
rescued from that " dryness " which is the
'distinguishing characteristic of, • former
